⚠️ SPOTTED LANTERNFLY CONFIRMED IN WESTFORD ⚠️

The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) has confirmed an infestation of spotted lanternfly in Westford. State and federal survey crews may be seen inspecting trees in the area as they work to determine the extent of the infestation.

Spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect that feeds on tree-of-heaven, grapevines, maple trees, hops, and many other plants. It can harm agricultural crops—particularly grapes—and may become a significant nuisance when adults gather in large numbers during late summer and fall.

The insects do not bite or sting. However, they produce a sticky, sugary waste called “honeydew,” which can coat vehicles, decks, outdoor furniture, and plants and promote the growth of sooty mold.

Westford residents and businesses can help:

📸 Learn how to identify spotted lanternfly during each stage of its life cycle.

👀 Check trees, vehicles, trailers, firewood, outdoor equipment, and other items stored outside.

📍 Photograph and report suspected sightings to MDAR. Reports from the public will help officials better understand where the insect is present.

Please help us spread awareness by sharing this post. Early detection and public reporting remain important tools for slowing the spread of this invasive pest.
