❤️ A Life Saved Through Teamwork ❤️

Today was a powerful reminder that surviving sudden cardiac arrest often depends on a chain of people doing the right thing at exactly the right time.

On April 15, 2026, a gentleman in Westford suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. In those critical first moments, bystanders at the scene quickly recognized that something was seriously wrong, called 911, and took immediate action to help, beginning a chain of events that would ultimately help save his life.

On the other end of that call, Westford Public Safety Communications tele-communicators quickly recognized the severity of the emergency and provided clear, decisive instructions to those at the scene, while simultaneously coordinating the rapid response of Westford’s public safety resources. Their ability to remain calm, gather critical information, and guide lifesaving actions before responders arrived was an essential part of this successful outcome.

Members of the Westford Police Department and Westford Fire Department then arrived and continued those lifesaving efforts, working seamlessly together to provide high-quality CPR, defibrillation, advanced medical care, and the interventions necessary to give this gentleman the best possible chance of survival.

Today, that entire effort came full circle.

Members of Westford Police, Westford Public Safety Communications, and Westford Fire had the incredible opportunity to reunite with the gentleman whose life they helped save. During the reunion, responders were presented with Heartsaver Hero Awards from the American Heart Association, recognizing their extraordinary efforts and their role in a truly remarkable save.

This reunion represents exactly what the Chain of Survival is all about: a bystander willing to act, a tele-communicator providing decisive lifesaving direction, rapid activation of emergency resources, early CPR and defibrillation, and coordinated advanced care.

No single person made this outcome possible. It took an entire community working together.

To the bystanders who stepped forward when someone needed them, to our tele-communicators who provided important direction, and to the police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics who continued that care- thank you, and congratulations on this well-deserved recognition.

Most importantly, to our survivor: we are incredibly grateful that today we were able to meet again under much better circumstances. ❤️

Time for us to celebrate our graduate…
Congratulations to Firefighter/Paramedic Anastasia Nash and on graduating from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy’s Career Recruit Training Program.

This intensive 10-week program is led by some of the best the Massachusetts Fire Service has to offer, providing new firefighters from across the Commonwealth with the core skills they need as they begin their careers serving their communities. These skills form the foundation upon which these recruits will continue to build throughout their careers.

The completion of the fire academy also marks the completion of Firefighter/Paramedic Nash’s probationary period.

It has been great watching you grow in your role here in Westford. Congratulations on your achievement. Never stop learning. We wish you continued success and a long, healthy career!

We’re pleased to announce that the Westford Fire Department has taken delivery of new thermal imaging cameras.

These upgraded units replace equipment that was more than a decade old and represent a significant improvement in our operational capabilities. They will allow our crews to better identify heat signatures in low-visibility environments, enhance firefighter safety, and improve effectiveness during structure fires, searches, and other emergency incidents where every second counts.

We extend our sincere thanks to the residents of Westford for your support and for approving this purchase at Town Meeting. Your investment in this equipment directly strengthens our ability to serve and protect the community.

After this I think we are all caught up from last week 🫣.

Last week, the Westford Fire Department was proud to host recruits from the Reading Fire Department at our burn building for live-fire training.
The burn building provides firefighters with the opportunity to train in realistic fire conditions, helping them develop the skills, confidence, and decision-making abilities needed to safely and effectively respond to emergencies. From fire attack and search operations to communication and teamwork, this hands-on training is an essential part of preparing the next generation of firefighters.
We are always pleased to support our neighboring departments and help provide valuable training opportunities that strengthen the fire service throughout our region.
We wish the Reading recruits the best of luck as they begin their careers and thank the Reading Fire Department for choosing Westford's training facility.

Last week members from all 4 shifts further utilized the vehicles from the Westford Academy Mock Accident event to sharpen their auto extrication skills. Firefighters trained on the use of the new Hurst eDRAULIC extrication tools “Jaws of Life”. As seen in the picture, the tools are used to gain access to the passenger compartment of a vehicle that has been involved in a crash and the victim is trapped inside. These new eDRAULIC tools are battery powered and provide greater versatility of being used anywhere needed.

These vehicles were generously donated by Christopher’s Towing for the mock accident. Christopher’s then moved the vehicles to the fire station for this training. We appreciate your continued support!

On June 3rd, members of the Westford Fire Department participated in a mock motor vehicle crash demonstration for local high school seniors. This powerful event was designed to highlight the very real dangers of distracted and impaired driving, especially as students prepare for prom season, graduation, and other celebrations. The demonstration may have been difficult to watch, its message is an important one: every choice you make while driving matters.
We are proud to partner with our schools, law enforcement, EMS providers, and community organizations to help educate young drivers and promote safe decision-making. Our hope is that today's lesson serves as a reminder that no text message, phone call, or risky decision is worth a life.
Stay safe, drive responsibly, and always look out for one another.

Sorry for the delay in getting the next few posts out, things got busy, but we’ll get you caught up!

This week another two of our firefighters are celebrating both their one-year anniversary with the department and the successful completion of their probationary period.
During their first year, new members serve on probation to master essential skills. Upon graduation from this phase, firefighters receive their permanent badge number—an honor that stays with them throughout their entire career. This unique identifier is proudly displayed on both their badge and their helmet front.
We extend our sincere congratulations to these two firefighters on achieving this milestone, and we wish them long, safe, and successful careers serving the Westford community.
