NOTICE:
Westford Animal Control has received multiple reports of black bears in the area of Main Street and Depot Street over the past several weeks.
Many of the interactions involved human-provided food sources-specifically bird feeders and chicken coops lacking electric fencing. Black bears have an exceptionally keen sense of smell and can smell things that are many miles away. Once a bear has found an accessible food source, they will frequently return for more.
To keep your property, pets, and local wildlife safe, please take the following steps to secure your yard:
• Remove Bird Feeders Immediately: Birdseed, suet, and hummingbird nectar are huge attractants for bears.. Clean up any seed that has fallen on the ground.
• Protect Poultry and Livestock with Electric Fencing: Standard chicken wire will not keep a bear out. Installing electric fencing around your coop and run is the single most effective way to protect your flock.
• Secure Trash and Recycling: Store garbage cans inside a secure shed or garage until the morning of pickup. Do not leave trash out overnight. Clean trash barrels regularly with bleach or ammonia to minimize odors.
• Feed Pets Indoors: Never leave dog or cat food outside, and bring pet dishes inside immediately after feeding.
• Clean Outdoor Grills: Burn off food residue and grease after each use, and store grills inside a shed or garage when possible.
If you spot a bear in your yard, please do not approach it, instead, make loud noises (such as clapping, banging pots, or blowing a horn) from a safe distance to encourage it to move along.
When walking on trails, always keep dogs on leash and be aware of your surroundings! Walking while you look down at your phone is not good practice!
