The Central Pine Barrens Commission in cooperation with Suffolk County Parks, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and Brookhaven National Laboratory utilize fire danger signs that display every day during fire season (March through September) the fire danger rating for that day.
These signs inform the public the relative fire danger of any given day on a regional scale. The daily rating is posted at numerous locations throughout Suffolk County (including in front of the commission office on Old Riverhead Road). When the level reaches moderate or above, local fire departments and public land managers are alerted by Suffolk County Fire Rescue & Emergency Services. The goal of the rating is to educate the public about actions they should take to make sure they’re ready to protect their homes in the event of a brush fire.
