On April 24, 2017, Airmen from the New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing launched more than 1,700 miles into the Atlantic to answer a call for help from the motor vessel Tamar. After a deadly explosion left crew members critically burned, seven pararescuemen made a night jump into open ocean, battling high seas and limited visibility to reach those in need.

For days, they provided advanced medical care in extreme conditions, performing life-saving procedures usually reserved for hospitals, all while the ship remained far from rescue range.

Because of their skill, courage, and commitment, two lives were saved. Their heroic actions demonstrated not only their elite training, but also their unwavering dedication to their creed: ‘That Others May Live’.

This mission is a powerful reminder of what it means to be ready when others are having their worst day.

Today we celebrate 102 years of life and service 🇺🇸

On March 10, Retired Chief Master Sgt. Edward Ogden visited the 106th Rescue Wing. Ogden began his military career in 1942 when he enlisted with the Army Air Corps as an aircraft mechanic, serving on active duty through the end of World War II.

As one of the first to join the New York National Guard’s newly established 106th Bombardment Group in 1947, he helped lay the foundation for what would become the 106th Rescue Wing, shaping the culture and spirit carried forward by the Airmen who serve here today.

Over the course of more than 40 years of service, Chief Ogden exemplified commitment, professionalism, and pride in country. His legacy lives on in the Wing he helped build and in the Airmen who continue to serve here.

Happy 102nd Birthday Chief Ogden, and thank you for your extraordinary service and enduring impact! 🎉

Four of those brave men called the 106th Rescue Wing home, and we will forever remember them as brothers and friends. We honor their ultimate sacrifice and unwavering commitment to the mission of rescue.

Master Sergeant William Posch, 308th RQS

Technical Sergeant Dashan J. Briggs, 101st RQS

Their memory lives on in the mission, in the Wing, and in all who continue to serve alongside the legacy they left behind. 🇺🇸

One year ago today! 🔥🚒🚁

On March 8, 2025, Airmen from the 106th Rescue Wing joined a massive coordinated effort to battle the Pine Barrens Fire off Sunrise Highway in New York. The 106th Fire Department responded alongside more than 90 local fire departments as crews worked together to contain the fast-moving fire.

The New York National Guard’s response also included additional base firefighting vehicles, an HH-60W Jolly Green II helicopter assigned to the 106th Rescue Wing, and three New York Army National Guard UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters assigned to A Company, 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation Regiment based in Ronkonkoma, N.Y., conducting aerial firefighting operations using Bambi Buckets.

The response demonstrated the strength of partnerships across Long Island, as military and civilian responders worked side by side to protect the surrounding community.
