Due to anticipated extreme heat, Nankin Movie Nights will be canceled this Wednesday evening, July 15th.

The showing of The Minecraft Movie will be postponed to a later date and Nankin Movie Nights will resume as scheduled with the showing of Encanto on Wednesday, July 22nd. We hope to see you there!

Tuesday’s (July 14th) Smooth Summer Nights performance has been canceled due to anticipated extreme heat. Zonjic Meets Motown with Phase 5 will be rescheduled for August 11th.

Please be careful when riding and drivers please be aware of both bicycles and pedestrians.

Westland, summertime is back and so are the famous e-bikes (electric bikes). 🚴 We love seeing our residents and children out in the community and wanted to take a moment to refresh your knowledge on our local e-bike laws and provide a few safety tips!

What is an e-bike?

Under Michigan law an electric bike is a device that:

•Has a seat or saddle for the rider to sit.
•Has fully operable pedals.
•Uses an electric motor of no more than 750 watts (1 horsepower).

In Michigan, e-bikes are treated like traditional bicycles. You do NOT need a driver's license, registration, or insurance to operate one. However, you must follow all standard traffic laws and adhere to any rules/restrictions that may apply such as:

•E-bikes are generally allowed anywhere traditional bikes are with the exception of some designated trails, pathways, etc. Always pay attention to these posted signs.

E-bikes fall into three classes:
•Class 1: Pedal-assisted only, up to 20mph
•Class 2: Motor-powered (with or without pedaling), up to 20mph
•Class 3: Pedal-assisted only, up to 28mph
Note that you must be at least 14 years old to operate a Class 3 e-bike and must wear a helmet between the ages of 14-18.

A permanent label must be affixed on the e-bike that accurately identifies its class type. Note that not all motorized bikes meet the legal definition of an e-bikes.

Although strongly encouraged for riders of all ages, only a Class 3 e-bike operator is required to wear a helmet between the ages of 14-18.

Message from Mayor Kevin Coleman:

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the City of Westland’s third Mayor, Thomas (Tom) F. Taylor.

Tom was born in 1936 and moved to Nankin Township when he was 11 years old, right after the end of World War II. After graduation Tom served in the Marine Corps.

Tom served as mayor from 1975-1982, a pivotal period in the city’s early development. His leadership helped guide Westland as it matured from a newly incorporated city into a stable and growing community.

Mayor Taylor was the driving force behind the development of Taylor Towers, championing the vision of safe, affordable, and independent housing for Westland’s senior residents. Equally significant was the financial sustainability model he advanced, which enabled the facility to remain solvent, adaptable, and well maintained over time. That model continues to support ongoing upgrades and long-term stability for Taylor Towers decades later.

Through foresight, steady leadership, and a commitment to residents of all ages, Mayor Taylor left a lasting legacy. Taylor Towers stands as a living testament to his dedication to public service and to the City of Westland.

We express our condolences to Tom’s wife Phyllis and his entire family.
