Scott and legislative leaders draft emergency aid plan for home heating

As the war in Iran sends home heating costs skyward, Republican Gov. Phil Scott and Democratic lawmakers are negotiating an emergency aid package for the 15,000 Vermonters who rely on the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

At Southeastern Vermont Community Action, executive director Josh Davis said the impact of $6-a-gallon heating oil is already coming into focus.

β€œAs the temperatures drop, people are having to turn on their heating systems and are reaching out for support,” Davis said. β€œAnd we’re seeing prices that are just incredible when you’re comparing it to what people paid last year.”

Federal home-heating assistance isn't keeping pace with the rising cost of fuel, and elected officials are poised to draw down state reserves to keep low-income Vermonters from freezing this winter.

The years before kindergarten build the foundation for school and for life. In Head Start, children develop early language and literacy skills and learn to listen, share, and manage social / emotional health, so they start kindergarten confident and ready. Head Start also makes sure children are well fed and connected to the medical and dental care they need to grow and learn. Additionally, we support the families needs with Family Partners who connect people to other SEVCA resources or referrals within the community.

What Head Start offers children and families:

- Full-day classrooms: Safe, loving classrooms open 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with 32 hours of preschool per week; There are a limited number of full day/full year options, inquire to learn more details.
- Healthy meals: Nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snack every day
- Medical and dental homes: Help connecting every child with a doctor and dentist, keeping checkups current, plus hearing and vision screenings
- Summer and after-school options: Summer programming and after-school care to support families year-round
- Connection to SEVCA services: Easy referrals to SEVCA's other programs, from fuel and housing assistance to financial coaching and tax prep
