Statewide Burning Ban Issued in South Carolina Amid Elevated Wildfire Risk 🔥⚠️🚫

The South Carolina Forestry Commission has announced a statewide burning ban that will take effect at 7 a.m. on Friday, April 17, citing dangerous fire conditions expected to persist through the weekend.

The State Forester’s Burning Ban applies to all counties and prohibits all outdoor burning in unincorporated areas, including yard debris burning, prescribed burns, campfires, bonfires, and other recreational fires.

Officials say a combination of worsening drought conditions, low relative humidity, and gusty winds associated with an approaching cold front have created an elevated risk for wildfires across the state.

“When it’s this dry – energy release component values are at high-to-critical levels – we’re just as likely, if not more, to see wildfires that are fuel-driven rather than wind-driven,” said Darryl Jones, fire chief with the Forestry Commission. “Add the other volatile conditions of increased wind and lower relative humidity, and it becomes an especially precarious situation.”

Jones added that these conditions not only increase the likelihood of fires igniting easily and spreading rapidly, but also make them more difficult for firefighters to contain.

The ban does not apply to fires used for cooking or those contained within proper enclosures, such as portable outdoor fireplaces, chimineas, or permanent fire pits constructed of noncombustible materials that meet South Carolina fire codes. However, officials are urging residents to use extreme caution even when burning under those exceptions.

In addition, residents are advised to avoid activities that could spark fires, including operating certain equipment, parking vehicles on dry grass, and using fireworks.

The burning ban will remain in place until further notice, with officials stating that any changes will be announced publicly.

This evening, our department membership and county leadership came together to “Push In” our new Tanker 10.

"Pushing in" a new fire truck is a traditional ceremony dating back to the late 1800s, when fire departments used horse-drawn equipment. Because horses could not easily back wagons into the firehouse, firefighters would unhitch them and push the apparatus into the bay by hand after a call. Today, it acts as a symbolic, community-led welcome for new equipment, emphasizing teamwork and honoring history.

Thank you to each of you who came out and supported us, and who continue to support us as we serve our community that we love so dearly.

Welcome to the family Tanker 10.
