Industrial activities can have a major impact on stormwater quality if not properly managed. From material storage to waste handling, pollutants can easily be picked up by rain and carried into nearby waterways.

Using proper controls—like covering materials, maintaining equipment, and ensuring proper disposal—helps prevent contamination and protects our environment.

Smart practices today lead to cleaner water tomorrow.

Proper septic system maintenance helps protect your home—and our waterways.

Failing systems can leak harmful bacteria and nutrients into groundwater, streams, and ponds. Regular inspections and pumping help keep your system working efficiently and prevent pollution.

A well-maintained septic system is a simple way to protect public health and the environment.

♻️ Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Protect our waterways.

What we throw away—and how we dispose of it—can have a direct impact on stormwater quality. Lightweight litter, plastic containers, bottles, and other waste can easily be carried by wind and rain into storm drains, eventually reaching our rivers, lakes, and wetlands.

You can help by:

♻️ Recycling properly

🗑️ Securing trash and recycling bins

🚮 Picking up litter when you see it

🌎 Choosing reusable products whenever possible

Small actions create cleaner streets, healthier communities, and cleaner water for Westminster.

Did you know your tires can impact water quality?

Underinflated tires wear down faster, creating more tire particles that can wash into storm drains and end up in our waterways. Keeping your tires properly inflated helps reduce pollution, improve fuel efficiency, and extend the life of your tires.

A quick pressure check can go a long way for both your vehicle and the environment.

🌎💧 Be Watershed Wise, Westminster!

Every action we take on our properties and in our community can impact the health of our local waterways. Litter, yard waste, pet waste, chemicals, and other pollutants can be carried by stormwater into rivers, streams, ponds, and wetlands.

You can help protect our watershed by:

✅ Disposing of trash properly

✅ Picking up pet waste

✅ Keeping leaves and grass clippings out of storm drains

✅ Properly storing and disposing of chemicals

✅ Reporting illicit dumping or spills

Together, we can keep Westminster’s waters clean, healthy, and enjoyable for everyone.

When it rains, it drains—and carries more than just water.

Stormwater runoff flows from roofs, driveways, and streets, picking up pollutants like pet waste, fertilizers, motor oil, and trash along the way. This runoff often goes directly into our local waterways without treatment.

Simple actions—like picking up after pets, reducing fertilizer use, and properly disposing of waste—can help keep our water clean.

Every drop matters.

Automotive repair shops play an important role in protecting our waterways. Everyday activities like vehicle maintenance, fluid changes, and equipment cleaning can contribute pollutants to stormwater if not handled properly.

Simple practices—like properly storing materials, cleaning up spills right away, and disposing of waste correctly—can make a big difference in keeping our stormwater systems functioning properly and our local waters clean.

Small actions in the shop lead to big impacts in our environment.

🎨🚫 Storm drains are for rain — not paint disposal!

Paint, solvents, stains, and other household chemicals should never be poured into a storm drain. Unlike wastewater, stormwater often flows directly to local streams, ponds, wetlands, and other water bodies without treatment. Even small amounts of paint can harm aquatic life and degrade water quality.

Always dispose of leftover paint and related materials properly through approved collection programs or household hazardous waste events.

🌱💧 Protect Westminster’s groundwater by using fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides responsibly.

When these products are overapplied or used improperly, rain and irrigation can carry excess chemicals through the soil and into groundwater, streams, ponds, and wetlands. Following label instructions, applying only what is needed, and avoiding applications before heavy rain can help reduce pollution and keep our water resources healthy.

A little care in the yard can make a big difference for water quality throughout the community.

🚗💧 Small actions can make a big difference for water quality!

Help prevent stormwater pollution year-round by washing your vehicle on a grassy or landscaped area whenever possible. This allows water to soak into the ground, where soil can naturally filter out pollutants such as soap, oil, grease, and dirt before they reach local waterways.

Remember: Storm drains lead directly to our rivers, streams, ponds, and wetlands. Keeping pollutants out of storm drains helps protect Westminster’s natural resources for everyone.
