Westminster Fire Department Our mission is to enhance community safety through preparedness, prevention, education, and response The department responds to over 17,000 calls a year.
(4)

Founded in 1934 as a one-station volunteer department, the Westminster Fire Department has grown substantially and now operates as an all-career, all hazards fire department utilizing the 48/96 scheduling model. The city of Westminster as a whole has also evolved from its roots as a small farming community on the outskirts of Denver to the city it has become today. The Westminster Fire Department

is comprised of 144 personnel, both commissioned and civilian. The executive command team includes a fire chief, two deputy chiefs, an EMS chief, fire marshal, training chief, emergency management coordinator, management analyst, executive assistant and three shift battalion chiefs to oversee the department. Almost 70 percent of those are medical related. The remainder of calls include response to fires, alarms, hazardous materials, rescues (water, technical, etc.) and public assists. Response time is typically under six minutes. The Westminster Fire Department has been awarded accredited status through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). This accreditation demonstrates that Westminster meets or exceeds industry best standard practices. The City of Westminster also acheived Class 1 status through the Insurances Services Office (ISO). This is the highest rating that a city/fire department can attain. Only .04% of fire departments across the United States and Canada have achieved both accredited status as well as an ISO 1 rating.

At 6:12 this morning, 911 calls were received reporting a fire at a townhome near 100th Avenue and Federal Boulevard. Fire crews arrived quickly and found flames showing from the front of the home. There were three occupants inside at the time of the fire. All were able to self-evacuate and three patients were transported to the hospital. The family dog also made it out safely. Later, one cat was found alive, while, sadly, another was found deceased inside the home. Westminster Police assisted with evacuating the two attached townhomes. Thanks to the quick actions of our crews, the fire did not spread to neighboring units, and those homes remain habitable.

Our investigation is ongoing, but the fire has been determined to be accidental.

Incidents like this are a good reminder to review your family's fire safety plan:
â–ª Ensure you have working smoke alarms in your home and test them regularly.
✅ In this case, working smoke alarms alerted the occupants to the fire and gave them valuable time to escape.
â–ª Know at least two ways out of every room.
✅ During this fire, some occupants escaped through a bedroom window. Take time to identify alternate exits and practice your home escape plan.
â–ª Keep doors closed to slow the spread of fire, heat, and smoke.
✅ In this incident, occupants closed the bedroom door before escaping through the window, which kept smoke and fire from entering the room.

Thank you to our North Area partners, North Metro Fire Rescue District and City of Thornton Fire Department , for their assistance. We also appreciate the support of Westminster PD, Animal Management, and Victim Advocates.

We are extremely saddened to hear of the loss of Lieutenant Tellinger. As we work so closely with North Metro Fire, this loss is particularly difficult.

Our thoughts are with his North Metro brothers and sisters, his wife, children, and family.

It is with great sadness that North Metro Fire Rescue District announces the off-duty death of Lieutenant Chad Tellinger due to illness. Chad was hired by North Metro in 1998 and proudly served the community and organization for more than 27 years. He was 52 years old.

Chad was a highly respected firefighter, mentor, IAFF Local 2203 leader, and beloved family man whose loss is deeply felt across the North Metro family. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, two sisters, and his mother.

The District is working closely with Chad’s family to coordinate services and support. With the family’s permission, additional information will be shared in the coming days.

This week, we recognize and celebrate our Paramedics and EMTs during EMS Week.

Nearly 70% of the calls we respond to are medical in nature, making emergency medical services a critical part of what we do every day. Our paramedics and EMTs provide exceptional pre-hospital care, bringing advanced training, skill, compassion, and calm to some of life’s most challenging moments.

From the work happening in the back of the medic unit to patient care on scene, our crews deliver care, comfort, and support when our community needs it most. Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to continuous training help ensure high quality care long before a patient reaches the hospital.

Thank you to our Paramedics and EMTs for the incredible work you do and the difference you make every day.
