Westminster Fire Department Our mission is to enhance community safety through preparedness, prevention, education, and response The department responds to over 17,000 calls a year.

Founded in 1934 as a one-station volunteer department, the Westminster Fire Department has grown substantially and now operates as an all-career, all hazards fire department utilizing the 48/96 scheduling model. The city of Westminster as a whole has also evolved from its roots as a small farming community on the outskirts of Denver to the city it has become today. The Westminster Fire Department is comprised of 144 personnel, both commissioned and civilian. The executive command team includes a fire chief, two deputy chiefs, an EMS chief, fire marshal, training chief, emergency management coordinator, management analyst, executive assistant and three shift battalion chiefs to oversee the department. Almost 70 percent of those are medical related. The remainder of calls include response to fires, alarms, hazardous materials, rescues (water, technical, etc.) and public assists. Response time is typically under six minutes. The Westminster Fire Department has been awarded accredited status through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). This accreditation demonstrates that Westminster meets or exceeds industry best standard practices. The City of Westminster also acheived Class 1 status through the Insurances Services Office (ISO). This is the highest rating that a city/fire department can attain. Only .04% of fire departments across the United States and Canada have achieved both accredited status as well as an ISO 1 rating.

Fully Charged? Time to Unplug ::: Unplug your device when it is fully charged.

Why it matters: Leaving a device plugged in can increase heat and stress on the battery.

So remember...once you hit 100%, it's time to pull the plug!

Oh, and working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan can help make a life-saving difference.

Lithium-ion batteries power so much of our everyday lives: phones! laptops! e-bikes! power tools! and more! They're safe when used properly, but a few smart charging habits can help prevent battery fires.

This month, follow along for safe-charging tips to help build habits that protect your home and family.

You can also visit one of our five Fire Safety Booths to learn more about lithium-ion battery and fire safety. (and snag your free smoke alarm while supplies last!)

Safe Charging is a Superpower: Safety Tip #3

Feels Hot? Stop Using It ::: Stop using your device if it feels very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.

Why it matters: a damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.

So remember...heat, smells, and weird sounds means your battery is trying to tell you something. Unplug the device and stop using it!

Overnight, fire crews responded to a detached garage fire near 90th Avenue and Tennyson Street. The first units arrived ...

Overnight, fire crews responded to a detached garage fire near 90th Avenue and Tennyson Street. The first units arrived in less than five minutes and quickly got water on the fire.

While the garage was in very close proximity to the home, crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to the main structure. A window was broken and some siding was damaged, but the fire did not extend into the home.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. This fire has been ruled accidental.

Safe Charging is a Superpower: Safety Tip #2

Soft Surface? Hard Pass ::: Charge on a hard, flat surface like a table, desk, or bare floor.

Why it matters: Devices and chargers can create heat during normal charging. Soft surfaces like beds, pillows, and couches can trap heat and block airflow, which can cause a battery to overheat.

So remember...while we all love to scroll on our phones in bed, don't tuck your charging device into the blanket or under the pillow!
