Westmont 2026 July 4th Celebration at Ty Warner Park - 6:40 PM UPDATE.

Food, beverage, activities, and music are expected to begin after 7:00 PM.

Once the current storm system passes, the weather is expected to remain clear for the remainder of the day.

The fireworks and drone show are expected to begin at 9:30 PM.

Please note that the park is very wet from the rain - please consider appropriate footwear.

POLLINATOR WEEK 2026!!

Day 5 - Hummingbirds🌼🌺🌸
In DuPage County, the Ruby-throated hummingbird is the only species you will regularly see. They arrive in mid-April, nest in backyards throughout the summer, and migrate south to Central America and Mexico by early October. Males boast an iridescent red throat, while females and juveniles have white-tipped tails and gray-white throats. As hummingbirds hover to consume nectar, their bodies and heads make contact with the anthers of a flower. Sticky pollen then clings to their feathers, which they eventually transfer to the stigma of the next blossom they visit. To attract these pollinators, which are drawn to brightly colored, tubular blossoms, consider incorporating native Midwestern perennials into your landscape, such as:

POLLINATOR WEEK 2026!!

Day 4 - Veggie Gardens🫛🍅🍉🍎🥕🥒🫐
Vegetable gardens serve as an essential lifeline for local pollinators. As these pollinators—including native bees—move between blossoms to feed, they perform a critical service by inadvertently transferring pollen from one flower to another. This process of cross-pollination is fundamental for the reproduction of many flowering plants and is especially crucial for home vegetable gardens, where successful fruit set for crops like tomatoes, squash, melons, and cucumbers often depends on consistent pollinator activity. By planting pollinator-friendly plants into our landscapes, we not only sustain healthy pollinator populations but also help ensure more robust, high-quality harvests for our own tables.

POLLINATOR WEEK 2026!!

Day 3 - Pollinator of the Year: Swallowtail Butterflies
Swallowtail butterflies (family Papilionidae). Nearly 600 species can be found worldwide, about 30 species are found in North America and 6 species can be found in DuPage County. Here are some planting suggestions to attract these beautiful pollinators to your garden:

1. Top Nectar Flowers (For Adult Butterflies) - Because of their larger size, swallowtails love broad, clustered blooms that give them a stable landing pad:
🔸Joe Pye W**d 🔸Coneflowers (Echinacea) 🔸Zinnias & Cosmos 🔸Lantana & Butterfly W**d 🔸Swamp Milkweed🔸Golden Alexander

2. Host Plants (For Caterpillars) - Adult swallowtails specifically search for these specific plants to lay their eggs. Swallowtail caterpillars like to eat:
🔸The Carrot Family: Parsley, dill, fennel, carrots, and Queen Anne's lace (favorites for the Black Swallowtail)🔸Herbs: Rue, Anise, and Tarragon🔸Trees and Shrubs: Citrus trees (for Giant Swallowtails), Pawpaw (for Zebra Swallowtails), and Spicebush

POLLINATOR WEEK 2026!!

Day 2 - Monarch Waystation 🦋🦋🦋
Westmont Monarch Waystations have been busy with visitors! Our local waystations function as thriving ecosystems, supporting an array of native, pollinator-friendly plants such as Echinacea simulata, Foxglove Beardtongue, Lance-leaved Coreopsis, and Ohio Spiderwort. By maintaining these natural habitats, we create indispensable sanctuaries that provide a nectar source and shelter to help ensure the survival and well-being of the monarch butterfly and other vital pollinators.

POLLINATOR WEEK 2026!!

Day 1 - The Bees Are Buzzin’ 🐝🐝🐝
Pollinator Week 2026 kicks off with a focus on the vital role of native bees in our ecosystem. Check out these two American bumblebees, Bombus pensylvanicus, snacking on the Rose rugosa 'Purple Pavement' flower. These bumblebees are among the more than 3,500 species of native bees in the U.S., and Illinois is home to more than 500 of them! All contributing to increasing crop yields and supporting the reproduction of flowering plants. Next time you're out for a walk, pay close attention to the plants and flowers you pass and see how many bees you can count!

FUTURE FRIDAY
We are known for being "The Progressive Village” and the Westmont Public Works is a department defined by continuous evolution and forward movement. There is always a project planned for infrastructure improvements, sidewalk replacement and road reconstruction to keep this village looking good and being maintained for future generations. We here at the Public Works Department ensure that every effort powers the connection between service and the people it supports!

Westmont Public Works fashion is very noticeable and we love making a statement with our highly visible attire! Safety and awareness are the top priorities for our crew while working in the field. They typically sport a Westmont logoed shirt, a safety vest, a hard hat, long pants, and work boots. We are BIG fans of the colors safety orange, safety yellow, red, black, and grey. You will know Public Works is on the job whenever you spot our logo in the area!
