Over the past several days, our community has experienced one of the most devastating flooding events in the history of Lewis county. In approximately three hours, Weston received an astounding 7.2 inches of rainfall, causing flash flooding that rapidly overwhelmed our area.
Throughout this event, members of the Weston Volunteer Fire Department, alongside our public safety partners, worked tirelessly to protect lives and property. Together, we completed approximately 80–100 water rescues, helping residents escape rapidly rising floodwaters. Every rescue was a reminder of the courage, teamwork, and dedication displayed by first responders throughout this emergency.
The Weston Volunteer Fire Department extends our deepest gratitude to the many fire departments, EMS agencies, law enforcement officers, WV DNR officers, emergency management personnel, swift-water rescue teams, public works crews, utility providers, dispatchers, and volunteers from across West Virginia who answered the call for assistance. Your willingness to leave your own communities to help ours will never be forgotten. Your support has been invaluable, and we are truly grateful.
We also want to thank the citizens of Weston and Lewis County for your patience, resilience, and overwhelming support. The road to recovery will take time, but our community has already shown that we are stronger together.
If you would like to assist those affected by the flooding, flood relief donations are being accepted at the Old Kroger Building from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Your generosity will help families as they begin the recovery process.
In the coming weeks, we hope to provide the community with more accurate call volumes and rescue numbers as we continue reviewing the events of this emergency.
