State and local officials, family, and friends gathered yesterday to celebrate the extensive career and upcoming retirement of Lewis-Gilmer E911/Lewis OEM Director Jim Gum. Director Gum has served Lewis County for 38 years in multiple roles, ultimately leading to his final stint as Director in 2021.

Throughout his tenure, Director Gum assisted in some of our agencies largest incidents, including the 2012 Derecho and COVID-19 operations. Gum also has been apart of 911 services in Lewis County from its infancy to what it is today.

Director Gum was former director Bill Rowan’s right hand man- to honor both, Assistant Director Keith Talbert presented Gum with a display case housing our new centers “first flag flown”. Thank you, “Gumby”, for your years of service to first responders and residents of Lewis and Gilmer Counties.

You are the first voice of help, the calm in chaos, and the bridge between emergencies and the responders who arrive on scene. Thank you for your commitment, compassion, and strength. We appreciate you today and every day.

Our address has officially changed! If you’ve been on US Highway 19 North, you’ve probably noticed an influx of vehicles at our new location. After a myriad of delays out of our control, we moved in mid January. Although we are still collaborating with vendors to provide everything we need to be successful, we are working, we are training, and we are excited for the future. We look forward to providing emergency dispatch services for years to come.
