Led by , today is a Global Day of Action dedicated to inspiring a reuse revolution around the world! 🌎

This World Refill Day, we're celebrating all our water refill stations across town - and the new ones on their way thanks to YOU!

Drumroll please.. 🥁 Introducing the brand new refill station at the Compo Beach basketball courts - the first in town made possible through Sustainable Westport fundraising and community support.

The simple habit of reaching for a reusable bottle instead of single-use plastic helps reduce waste, save resources, and keep our beaches, parks, and waterways cleaner.

What do 50 hungry lacrosse players and a more sustainable summer have in common? Less than one bag of trash. 🥍♻️

As part of June’s Unplastic Your Summer focus on Backyard and Entertaining, we're spotlighting team for showing how small changes can make a big impact.

This spring, the team created a reusable "Hospitality Kit" that traveled from host family to host family, replacing plastic tablecloths, disposable cutlery, and single-use drink bottles with reusable alternatives. They even set up food waste and recycling stations to help keep waste out of the trash.

The result? Feeding up to 50 athletes each week while generating less than one small bag of actual garbage per dinner! 🥍 💚

The approach wasn't about perfection—it was about making practical choices that reduced waste without creating extra burdens for families. And that's exactly what Unplastic Your Summer is all about!

Graduation season is here—and so are opportunities to celebrate sustainably! 🎓 🌎

📣 Did you know?

Connecticut recently passed legislation banning the intentional release of helium and other lighter-than-air balloons. While balloon releases have long been used to mark special occasions, they can harm wildlife, pollute waterways, and create litter that lasts far longer than the celebration itself.

As you honor graduates, milestone birthdays, weddings, and other summer celebrations, consider sustainable, plastic-free alternatives:

⏰ Two morning shifts available each day

We’ll be encouraging neighbors to take advantage of programs like:
🍎 Food scrap recycling
🫙 Separate glass recycling
📦 Cardboard recycling

We’ll provide all the training and messaging! We’re just looking for folks enthusiastic about recycling and sustainability who are comfortable striking up conversations and engaging with residents as they stop by…

We’re throwing it back… Trash Talk Thursday style! ♻️ 🙌

Earlier this month The Department of Public Works launched a campaign to educate Westport on proper recycling practices - “No Bags, No Food, No Foam”

🚫 No plastic bags
🥫 Rinse containers
📦 Remove Styrofoam before recycling cardboard

If these tips look familiar… it’s because Sustainable Westport has been sharing them for years! 💚💙

From rinsing containers to ditching plastic bags in the bin to applying the 2”x2” rule all year round.. we’re committed to helping our community recycle smarter one tip at a time.

HOT TAKE 🔥 “No Mow May” sounds good in theory… but it’s not the best long-term solution.

A better alternative? Mow to 4" for the entire growing season, or better yet, rethink a section of your lawn entirely.
