The Westport Office of Emergency Management is watching the track of a strong storm moving up the East Coast over the next 24-36 hours. The course of the storm is still uncertain, but residents should anticipate windy conditions, heavy rain, and possible thunderstorms mixed in. There is also a significant probability of coastal flooding.
NOAA information indicates that, as of this writing, rain and wind will be increasing mainly on Sunday afternoon. Winds from Sunday into Monday should be expected to be between 20-30mph with gusts between 37-47 mph. Rainfall totals indicate that the possible total precipitation may be between 2-3 inches of rain. The storm is expected to wrap up Monday night. Residents and guests are advised to keep updated on current and predicted weather conditions from trusted sources, as the storm course and intensity may change.
As of this writing, a Coastal Flood Watch, Coastal Flood Statement, Hazardous Weather Outlook, and Wind Advisory are in effect for the Town of Westport.
Residents are urged to subscribe to the Town’s official alerting system through Nixle. Sign-up
at www.nixle.com or Text 06880 to 888777.
Residents and travelers are advised not to drive or walk through flood waters. It can be difficult to estimate the depth and current of the water based on the surface presentation. Also watch for falling tree debris and downed power lines as a result of the winds. All power lines should be considered live and present an electrocution hazard as well as an entanglement hazard when driven over.
If you lose power, make notification to your electrical provider. If you are going to run a generator, make sure that the exhaust is unobstructed and not near any windows or doors. You should reference the product documents to determine a safe distance from the structure to operate the specific generator.
Westport Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor the situation and make operational changes and notifications as deemed necessary.
