Last year, we began our first clearing phase, concentrating on the 10 acres of fields

• Clearing out all invasive species of brush from 3 fields. Our main event field, our food forest field and row crop fields. This spring, we hope to get soil ready for the season's planting.

• We’ve already removed numerous dead trees, limbs, and hanging vines. This is an ongoing operation, we check the property daily to identify these type of hazards and schedule their removal.

• We are also going to be building numerous pruning boxes for the cultivation of saplings. These saplings will replace the native hardwoods that were stripped from the land for centuries . These varieties that were used in industry from everything from buildings, to furniture and boats will become our new old age forest for centuries to come.

These varieties that were used in industry from everything from buildings, to furniture to boats, will become our new old age forest for centuries to come.ome.come.ome.me.

•We’ve done extensive work on the laneway. It has been reclaimed wall-to-wall after being nonexistent. This helps greatly with parking and better access.

• Along with soil prep for our food forest, row crop field and other plantings we’ve also inoculated some logs to start our mushroom farming operation.

One may say we have a rather ambitious, rigorous schedule ahead. It’s a lot of work ahead for sure but I’m confident we’ll get it all done. As you can see below we are committed.

Seasons Greetings from Wainer Woods.

As we head away from Winter Solstice, we are reminded to dial it back. As the light returns, we look forward to catching up with family and friends and preparing for the coming year.

This past year’s hard work, over the spring and summer, kept us on schedule for preparing for the 250 Westport celebrations.
In 2026, you can expect Wainer Woods to be part of the Nation’s celebration in a uniquely commemorative way. We’ll highlight the Native Americans' role during that time.

2026 will bring us closer to our goal of creating spaces to learn from and reap the benefits of a well-cared for land.

Join our email list to be notified of upcoming events and calls for volunteers.

Consider a year-end donation to support our mission and our work on the land.
