Last Tuesday, August 18th, members of the Westport Community Volunteer Fire Department spent the evening training on vehicle extrication.

Howell Rescue Systems Inc. brought out Genesis Rescue Systems extrication equipment for us to demo and train with. This gave our members the opportunity to work with some of the latest extrication technology available and get hands-on time cutting, spreading, and working through different rescue techniques.

Members from Adams Township Fire Department also joined us for the training to demo the equipment and freshen up their extrication skills.

Training like this is important to us. Vehicle construction and rescue equipment continue to change, and we want to make sure our firefighters stay up to date, keep improving their skills, and are prepared to provide the best service we can when our community needs us.

A special thank you to Howell Rescue Systems Inc. for taking the time to come out, provide the equipment, and work with our firefighters. We would also like to thank Tim’s Wrecker Service for providing the vehicles used during the training. We appreciate everyone who helped make the evening possible.

We’re excited to share that the Westport Fire Department was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation for our Battery-Powered Emergency Response Equipment for Community Resilience project.

With this grant, we were able to purchase new battery-powered equipment, including a rescue saw, chainsaw, portable scene lighting, and charging equipment. These tools will help us respond more safely and efficiently during vehicle accidents, storms, power outages, and other emergencies throughout our community.

On behalf of everyone at the Westport Fire Department, thank you to the Duke Energy Foundation for believing in our department and investing in the safety of our community. We truly appreciate your support and the difference it will make for both our firefighters and the people we serve every day.

Thank you for helping us be better prepared when our community needs us most.

⚠️ WEATHER ALERT – TORNADO WATCH

Heads up Westport and surrounding communities.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for our area. This means conditions are favorable for severe storms capable of producing tornadoes later today.

Right now is the time to stay weather aware and have a plan ready in case storms develop quickly.

A few quick reminders:
• Keep weather alerts turned on
• Know where your safe place is (basement or interior room)
• Secure loose outdoor items
• Be ready to move to shelter if a warning is issued

🚧 ROAD CLOSURE ALERT – ST RD 3 🚧

The Westport Community Volunteer Fire Department would like to alert residents that State Road 3 is currently closed between 800 S and Kentucky Avenue due to downed power lines across the roadway.

⚠️ This closure will remain in place for an unknown amount of time while utility crews respond and work to repair the lines.

Please avoid the area and use alternate routes if possible. Downed power lines are extremely dangerous—do not approach them and keep a safe distance.

We will reopen the roadway once the area is safe and cleared by the utility company.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation while crews work to resolve the issue.
