⚠️ WEATHER ALERT – TORNADO WATCH

Heads up Westport and surrounding communities.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for our area. This means conditions are favorable for severe storms capable of producing tornadoes later today. 

Right now is the time to stay weather aware and have a plan ready in case storms develop quickly.

A few quick reminders:
• Keep weather alerts turned on
• Know where your safe place is (basement or interior room)
• Secure loose outdoor items
• Be ready to move to shelter if a warning is issued

🚧 ROAD CLOSURE ALERT – ST RD 3 🚧

The Westport Community Volunteer Fire Department would like to alert residents that State Road 3 is currently closed between 800 S and Kentucky Avenue due to downed power lines across the roadway.

⚠️ This closure will remain in place for an unknown amount of time while utility crews respond and work to repair the lines.

Please avoid the area and use alternate routes if possible. Downed power lines are extremely dangerous—do not approach them and keep a safe distance.

We will reopen the roadway once the area is safe and cleared by the utility company.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation while crews work to resolve the issue.

🚨 Tornado Watch Issued for Westport & Surrounding Communities Until 12 PM — Stay Weather Aware This Morning 🌪️

🚨 Reminder: Statewide Tornado Drill Today 🚨

Don’t be alarmed if you hear the tornado sirens today at 10:15 AM. This is part of Indiana’s statewide tornado drill to help make sure our warning systems are working and everyone is prepared for spring severe weather.

When do the sirens sound for a real emergency?

Sirens may be activated when the National Weather Service issues warnings affecting our area, including:

🌪️ Tornado Warning (including Particularly Dangerous Situations)
💨 Severe Thunderstorms with winds of 70+ mph
⚠️ Severe Thunderstorms during a Tornado Watch
🌩️ Severe Thunderstorms tagged with “Tornado Possible”

Important Reminder

Outdoor warning sirens are designed to alert people who are outside. They may not always be heard inside homes or buildings.

📱 Stay Weather Aware
Make sure you have weather alerts enabled on your phone or weather apps, and follow trusted sources for updates during severe weather.

As you and your family head out to trick-or-treat on Friday we would like to remind you of a few safety tips:

💡 Be bright! Using reflective tape, carrying a flash light or glow sticks can make you more visible to drivers.

🏠 Visit well lit homes!

🍭 Always check your sweet treats before eating them!

And don’t forget to stop by the Westport Community Volunteer Fire Department — our firefighters will be handing out fresh apples to all the trick-or-treaters! We can't wait to see all the costumes! Stay safe and have fun!

🚒 Fire Prevention Month at South Decatur Elementary 🚒

This week, Westport Community Volunteer Fire Department and Millhousen - Marion Township Fire department had the privilege of visiting South Decatur Elementary to talk with the kids about fire safety and prevention. The students learned some valuable lessons, got hands-on by rolling out fire hose, and even had the chance to spray some water with the crew! 💦👩‍🚒👨‍🚒

We want to remind all parents:
✅ Check your smoke detectors regularly.
✅ Change batteries when needed.
✅ Make and practice a family escape plan in case of a house fire.

And parents, don’t be surprised if your little ones start bugging you about testing your smoke detectors tonight—they’re officially trained fire safety inspectors now! 😉

Thank you to South Decatur Elementary for letting us spend time with your awesome students, and thank you to the community for always supporting fire prevention efforts. Together, we can keep Westport safe!
