Explorer camp day 3. Explorers worked together as a team completing task for their assigned missions. They later utilized different areas of camp to perform medical skills, building search and rescue and outdoor search and victim removal over steep terrain. After yesterday’s training day, they had a chance to spend some down time on the water and around camp. Special thanks to all the instructors for all of their hard work. Camp Cachalot

Westport Fire Explorer camp day 2. Explorers spent their day at the Fall River Fire Academy utilizing the training tower. They started the morning with pt with Westport Firefighter Andy Ferrarini. Then worked closely with the Bristol County Technical Rescue team learning about their various equipment and were lowered from the top of the training tower (about 6 stories). Rehab was provided by Fall River Fire Special Service - EMA and Westport Emergency Management Special Services on this very hot day. A very special thank you to the Fall River Fire Department for allowing us to use the training site and be assisted by their training Lt., Lt. Arnold. Also thank you to the Somerset Fire Dept for providing additional instructions for our event. Explorers spent the afternoon doing search and rescue, hose advancement and water supply along with ladders. A very special thanks to all the Westport Mass Permanent Firefighters and Fire Explorer Post leaders and support staff for all their help today. We were also visited by our Narragansett Council representatives and representatives from the Massachusetts Call Volunteer Firefighters Association.

Tonight’s meeting we touched on 911 communications. We had a guest Dispatcher from a metro comm area join our zoom meeting and share some of his experiences about the job. (A word from the Post Advisor)
Our post meetings have continued through this pandemic and the time spent together at these meetings has continued to bring joy and laughter. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue to grow and learn with these Explorer. Whether it’s checking in with everyone, talking about our day, joking around with the mute button or planning for the future. We will come out of this even stronger, more of a family and just overall amazing. Tonight we went through a PowerPoint on Wildland and ground fires. Having one of our own actually work for the state as forest control contributed immensely to tonight’s lesson as he was able to share some real life experiences. Researching YouTube videos and just discussing the aspects of the job gives everyone the understanding of the different career paths to consider. The future is uncertain, but we will continue to learn, continue to grow, in whichever direction that might be and take one day as it comes. During this surreal time, we will adapt and overcome. Even if there’s been a little damper on things, a little delay with the program, we will get there one way or another. It makes me appreciate each one of them, take a pause and realize how much we have been able to accomplish as a group. Exploring isn’t just about recruitment, exploring is so much more. It allows for growth as a future leader, guidance for a future career and just an experience of camaraderie that can never be recreated. There is hope, there will be light at the end of this tunnel, and we will all be together again with bells and whistles and probably our masks on. I will never take for granted our Westport Explorers and how far we’ve come. -Ann Marie Peckham

Tonight Westport Fire Explorer Post 774 had our first virtual training meeting. Building on the confidence we gained in our recent virtual meetup and check-in session, FF Peckham lead tonight’s training. The training topics included fire behavior and how lessons learned from historical fires are used to protect lives and safety today.

The training was attended by several post members who used their textbooks and took notes along with the lecture. As with the lessons learned from historical fires, we learned some lessons today that should help us all get better at virtual trainings...

1.) Mute all the mics at the start of the class and UNMUTE them when you want to speak. (Kinda like using a hand held radio)

2.) People on zoom can see you when your camera is on... not only when you’re talking.

3.) When more than 2 people talk at the same time things get tough to understand.

4.) Being in a distraction free space for the meeting is important for you AND everyone else on the meeting.

5.) Giving “Gold Stars” for stepping up and answering questions in the class is more challenging in a virtual environment. (Don’t for a second think that stopped FF Peckham though!)

6.) Seriously.... mute ALL of the microphones at the start.

Zoom Video Communications - Is there a way for the host to mute all mics on a meeting from their control panel? Might be useful if a meeting starts to get off the rails a bit.

Wednesday’s night drill was a collaboration of search and mayday procedures at Dartmouth Fire District 2. Utilizing their training building and help from their personnel, Explorers entered the building with their SCBA's and conducted a search for a victim, they also worked on RIT and MayDay procedures with harness conversion to extricate and downed firefighter. We would like to thank DFD2 for the use of the training building along with help from their staff and look forward to more joint drills with them!
