WESTWOOD SHOWED UP: 25 trees planted in less than 2 hours. Over 50 volunteers including Westwood Volunteer Ambulance Corps Alpha Beta Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. AmeriCorps and more! THANK YOU to DPW Superintendent Rick Woods and your crew for the coordination and labor to dig the holes, deliver the trees, unload mulch, and water the trees. We LOVED hosting arborist Liz Stewart who taught everyone how to properly plant a containerized tree. Score the roots, find the root flare, and mulch donuts NOT volcanoes! I think we 100% proved this concept that we can plant an entire street with our community, so where should we go next???

Not a water delivery. It’s a forest in progress thanks to WSTC member Terry Beutel, for collecting these water jugs and filling them for tomorrow’s Arbor Fest plantings on Harding Ave! The DPW is also deploying their water jet truck after the event to water again.

Can we share some love for the Westwood DPW?? They dug 25 holes today on this abnormally high 90° day in mid-April. We will see you Saturday at 10:30am to kickoff planting trees!!

Visualizing the impact of 25x new trees to Harding Ave with our online Street Tree Inventory Map. The highlighted yellow dots are the new trees we're planting with the community on Saturday April 18th at 10:30am.

We've selected a smaller Acer ginnala Ruby Slippers species for curb strips under the wires. Originally we had selected a single stem native Serviceberry tree, however the nursery we use lost all of their serviceberries over the winter. In planting spaces without utility wires, we selected medium size Prunus serrulata Kwanzan trees for their benefits to pollinators and deer resistance.

Good Morning Harding Ave!! 25X tree locations were marked out by DPW and WSTC yesterday morning. Holes will be dug in the marked out “T” circled with spray paint over the next 2 days. We’re excited to have our first street tree planting blitz start with this neighborhood which is impacted so hard by flooding.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We’re planting 25 trees in 2 hours on April 18th. We’re planting the entire street of Harding Ave. starting at 10:30am (mostly minus a couple addresses). Shade Tree likes to set the bar higher each year for Westwood Arbor Fest and we’re partnering with Phoebe from AmeriCorps.
