The Wethersfield RTC would like to take a moment and extend its heartfelt appreciation to Shelley Carbone for her outstanding leadership and commitment to Wethersfield during her time on Town Council. From the start, Shelley exhibited exemplary leadership, posing critical questions and standing firm on key issues. Her dedication to the principles of honesty, transparency, and respect was clearly evident. A notable highlight was her involvement in the committee to bring the first responders mural to the Pitkin Center. We are grateful for her achievements and will miss her presence on the council.

Shelley is not on social media but we hope each and every one of you say thank you as you see her around town. She deserves all of our gratitude for a job well done.

Last night, our BOE members - Charles Carey, Jim Reilly and Amanda Drew - attempted to make the last day of school Friday, June 19th asking for instructional programs on Juneteenth (much like Veteran’s Day) which would have avoided the kids coming back for one day on a Monday after a 3 day break. This was rejected by the majority and the last day will be Monday, June 22nd.

The Board of Ed Chair added her own rationale and we invite you to watch the YouTube meeting for yourself. Here is what we heard:

ā€œI’m not so sure there’s great instructional time at that time of the year. I think we just have to get the days in. We were looking at working something for Juneteenth, but I think it would be horribly rushed right now that’s another issue in that and what we’re trying to do is to get our children through the school year learning and not those fake end of the year days that happened all the time I think this is the best chance we have right now of getting the most kids into the building, they’re not coming back on Monday. That’s my thought anyways but we need to get those kids into the building while we have them. They are learning and we all know what goes on at the end of the school year in those Buildings.ā€

We heard the Chair of the Board of Education say that Juneteenth can be considered a fake, end of the year holiday, kids aren’t really learning anything at the end of the year and the kids aren’t coming back on Monday anyway. What about you??

The Superintendent submitted his budget proposal of $70,490,088 last night to the BOE, representing a 4.48% increase, which includes funding for 10 additional personnel. A big thank you to our members Charles Carey, Jim Reilly and Amanda Drew who attempted to lower the budget in a respectful and sound way which would not include the additional hires all while making sure there were no layoffs. The vote was 5-3 to forward the superintendent’s budget without changes. Presentation to the Town will be April 20th in Town Chambers.
