Last night, our BOE members - Charles Carey, Jim Reilly and Amanda Drew - attempted to make the last day of school Friday, June 19th asking for instructional programs on Juneteenth (much like Veteranās Day) which would have avoided the kids coming back for one day on a Monday after a 3 day break. This was rejected by the majority and the last day will be Monday, June 22nd.
The Board of Ed Chair added her own rationale and we invite you to watch the YouTube meeting for yourself. Here is what we heard:
āIām not so sure thereās great instructional time at that time of the year. I think we just have to get the days in. We were looking at working something for Juneteenth, but I think it would be horribly rushed right now thatās another issue in that and what weāre trying to do is to get our children through the school year learning and not those fake end of the year days that happened all the time I think this is the best chance we have right now of getting the most kids into the building, theyāre not coming back on Monday. Thatās my thought anyways but we need to get those kids into the building while we have them. They are learning and we all know what goes on at the end of the school year in those Buildings.ā
We heard the Chair of the Board of Education say that Juneteenth can be considered a fake, end of the year holiday, kids arenāt really learning anything at the end of the year and the kids arenāt coming back on Monday anyway. What about you??
