The Weymouth Police Marine Unit was proud to join fellow local, state, and area police and fire marine units in es**rting the Boston Fire Department’s newest vessel, the Martin Pierce, into Boston Harbor yesterday. The es**rt highlighted the strong partnerships, mutual respect, and shared commitment to public safety that connect agencies across the region. In the wake of the tragic passing of Firefighter Robert Kilduff Jr., moments like these serve as a powerful reminder of how our public safety community comes together to support one another during difficult times. Our participation in the es**rt reflected not only our commitment to regional collaboration, but also our shared respect, remembrance, and solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the fire service. We are proud to stand alongside our public safety partners and were grateful for the opportunity to take part in this meaningful display of solidarity and unity on the water.

The Weymouth Police Marine Unit was honored to support the Weymouth Veterans Council during this morning’s Veterans Wreath Laying Ceremony off Wessagussett Yacht Club.

During this solemn Memorial Day observance, a wreath was blessed and laid at sea off the waters of Wessagussett Beach in tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country, as well as to their families whose strength and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

The ceremony also included a gun salute presented by the George R. Bean American Legion Post 79 Color Guard, serving as a powerful reminder of the courage and dedication of those we honor today.

It was a privilege for the Marine Unit to participate in this meaningful tradition of remembrance. As we gathered on the water, we reflected on the sacrifices of our fallen veterans, especially those lost at sea, whose service and devotion to our nation will forever be remembered.

May we always honor their legacy and never forget those who gave everything in defense of our freedom.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in this morning’s first-ever expired Marine Flare Collection Event. With your support, we collected well over 500 expired marine flares, helping to reduce potential safety hazards in our community.

Expired marine flares can become unstable over time, increasing the risk of accidental ignition, fire, or serious injury if they are stored improperly. In addition to these dangers, improper disposal—such as discarding flares in household trash or waterways—can have harmful environmental impacts, including the release of hazardous materials into our coastal ecosystem.

All flares collected today will be handled and disposed of in accordance with Massachusetts environmental regulations, in coordination with the Weymouth Fire Department, ensuring safe and compliant processing of these materials.

Initiatives like this are essential to maintaining safe boating practices, reducing fire risk, and protecting our marine environment. We appreciate the community’s strong participation and encourage all mariners to routinely inspect their safety equipment and utilize proper disposal options for expired flares.

The Weymouth Police Department announces a free Marine Flare Collection Event to be held at the George Lane Beach parking lot on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

This initiative underscores the importance of proper storage and disposal of marine safety equipment. Marine flares, particularly those that are expired or deteriorating, present a significant safety risk due to their potential for accidental ignition, instability, and environmental harm. Ensuring their safe disposal is critical to protecting both the public and the marine environment.

All area boaters are encouraged to participate by bringing expired or unwanted marine flares for safe, no-cost disposal. This will be a drive-through event to promote efficiency and public safety.

Accepted items include marine handheld flares, aerial flares, and smoke signals. The department will not accept road flares, electronic flares, or any other hazardous waste materials.

The Weymouth Police Department appreciates the community’s cooperation in promoting marine safety and responsible disposal practices. Please refer to the event flyer for additional details.
