It breaks my heart to say this, but it happens all the time: waterfowl caught in discarded fishing line.

These thin, nearly invisible strands wrap around wings, legs, beaks—even necks. Sometimes there’s a hook at the end. Sometimes that hook is buried deep inside a bird’s throat. Rescues are never easy. Often, it takes boats, teams of people, and a lot of patience to safely capture the tangled bird.

And even then, the damage can be devastating.

This young gosling was found with fishing line wrapped tightly around his right leg and wing. His parents couldn’t help him. But kind strangers came together and made sure he got to us. A huge thank you to Tracy and her husband Jim along with Aimee and her daughter for taking the time to rescue this little one.

We’re doing everything we can to save his leg and wing. Geese can’t survive on one leg or one wing - so this is a fight for his life.

PLEASE dispose of your fishing line properly. One careless moment can cost a wild animal everything.

This goose had been hanging out at the pond for a week with fishing line wrapped around his leg. Luckily the animal control officer and his partner were able to catch him today and remove the line! 💖
This is a good reminder why it is beneficial to pick up and dispose of your fishing line properly to avoid situations such as this!

Natural Resource Officer Brian Willard and Sergeant Owings and Officer Contessa Pica worked together to set free a goose from Whitman Pond after it became entangled in fishing line. Following careful removal of the line, the goose was released unharmed. When participating in fishing or water-based recreation, please be considerate of wildlife and take necessary precautions to avoid causing harm, as fishing lines can pose a significant threat to animals.

Poor crow got tangled in fishing line and was just hanging there stuck 😔
Thankful that animal control was able to rescue him. He will be well cared for with Free Bird & Wildlife Rehabilitation Inc. until he can be released. Just another reason to make sure you take care of your fishing line. Who knows how it got tangled in that tree.

I collected from the bin earlier this week and was happy to see it was full of line again! 😃 Thank you to everyone who is using it!

I did find several hooks on the ground in the flat area next to the steps 😟 please remember to dispose of hooks properly by taking them with you in a little plastic container and putting in the trash . This will keep birds, wildlife and pets from accidentally getting stuck by one.
