Public Warning System Statewide Drill-April 2, 2026

A statewide public warning system drill will be conducted on April 2, 2026 between 10 AM and 12:30 PM CST to enhance emergency communication readiness across Texas. Effective of alerting— three systems such as landline, notifications, wireless, emergency alerts, and the integrated public alert, and warning system— is essential to community safety. Regular testing ensures these systems function reliably during emergencies.
Add accordance with chapter 418.043 of the Texas government code, the Texas division of emergency management is coordinating this drill to evaluate and strengthen local and interjurisdictional emergency communication capabilities. Participating entities are expected to test their primary alternate and backup alerting systems to ensure operational continuity.

Purpose of this Drill:

The drill is designed to verify system performance, enhance user proficiency, increase public awareness, encourage emergency preparedness and identify areas for improvement prior to real world incidents.

Who should Participate:

Participation is expected from designated alerting authorities at the city and county levels, as well as local emergency management programs. Additional participants include educational institutions, councils of government River authorities, tribal nations, law-enforcement agencies, and any organizations with emergency alerting capabilities.

❗️UPDATE ❗️

Wharton Fire has advised that all residents may return to the area. If you still smell a strong odor of gas you’re advised to open up windows and air out your house.

**MAJOR GAS LEAK**

A major gas leak has occurred in the area of W. Milam and Hughes Sts in Wharton. Wharton Fire Department has advised for citizens to shelter in place and refrain from turning on any major appliances. We will update when the matter has been resolved.

***ROADWAY OPEN***

Per TxDOT, task was completed early and all roadways related to this notice are open.

Starting this morning at 8am, the intersection of Highway 60 and 59 will be closed due to crews working on the Hwy59/I-69 overpass. It will be closed until late Sunday evening. Be sure to research alternate routes and avoid the intersection. All exits from and entrances to Hwy 59 at that point will be closed. Stay safe.

‼️Traffic Alert‼️

WB will have the South Bound exit ramp for FM 1161 closed tomorrow to complete the asphalt tie-in for the ramp. This closure will start in the morning around 7am.
