The Platte County Sheriff’s Office is issuing the following public service announcement for residents in the Chugwater area.

On May 13, 2026, at approximately 10:30 p.m., a Platte County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a pickup traveling at a high rate of speed within the town of Chugwater. The vehicle fled from law enforcement and proceeded onto Interstate 25, where it later traveled off-road and came to a stop. The vehicle was subsequently determined to be stolen. The occupants then fled the scene on foot. The Platte County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team and K-9 Team were deployed to assist in the search.

Deputies remained in the area throughout the night and successfully apprehended the two individuals involved on the morning of May 14, 2026. During the investigation, it was determined that the individuals were connected to numerous stolen vehicles and weapons between Casper and Cheyenne.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to secure their vehicles and residences, particularly during nighttime hours. While our communities are valued for their safety and close-knit nature, this incident serves as an important reminder to remain vigilant, especially in an area with direct access to a major interstate corridor.

The Platte County Sheriff’s Office thanks the Wyoming Highway Patrol and the Wheatland Police Department for their assistance in this matter.

🚨Scam Alert 🚨
We want to make our community aware of another scam that has recently been circulating. This scam involves a fraudulent court enforcement notice that instructs recipients to pay a traffic citation by scanning a QR code.

These notices are designed to appear official in order to pressure individuals into making an immediate payment.

If you receive a message or document like this:
• Do not scan the QR code
• Do not send payment
• Verify the information by contacting the appropriate agency directly

Scammers often rely on urgency and official-looking documents to trick people into acting quickly. If you have any doubts about a notice you receive, always contact the court or law enforcement agency using their official phone number to confirm whether the document is legitimate.

PUBLIC AWARENESS: The Platte County Sheriff's Office has been notified of yet another attempt to scam individuals. The jury duty scam call claims you have a warrant for missed jury duty, but you can take care of the issue through miscellaneous and obscure payment options. These calls are fraudulent; no court or law enforcement agency will demand payment over the phone. Scammers impersonate law enforcement officers, sheriffs, or court officials, claiming you missed jury duty and now face arrest or fines. They often use caller ID spoofing to make the call appear legitimate and may reference personal information like your name, address, or even case numbers to increase credibility. The scam typically involves urgent threats, pressuring victims to pay immediately via gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or payment apps like Venmo or Cash App. If you or someone you know receives a phone call like this, please do not offer them payment. If you have any questions or concerns, you can contact the Platte County Sheriff's Office at (307) 322-2331 or Platte County Dispatch at (307) 322-2140.

🚨 **Travel Advisory – Strong Winds** 🚨

Strong winds continue to impact travel across our area, and drivers are urged to remain alert while on the road.

The video attached (3/14/26 at approximately 1429hrs) shows one of our deputies responding to a traffic complaint of a semi that was struggling to maintain its lane and almost overturned near mile marker 51 on Interstate 25.

As the deputy caught up to the semi, a strong gust of wind caused it to overturn directly in front of other traffic.

Incidents like this happen quickly and highlight how dangerous high winds can be—especially for high-profile vehicles, trailers, and lightweight vehicles.

If you must travel, please reduce your speed, keep both hands on the wheel, and remain aware of surrounding traffic and conditions. Consider delaying travel if possible until conditions improve.

Please stay safe and be aware while traveling.

It is with heavy hearts that the Platte County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of K9 Pancho, after a courageous, quiet battle with degenerative disc disease.

Pancho passed away peacefully today, surrounded by his handler, Captain Will Kirlin and his family.

Pancho served Platte County from October 9th, 2020, until he retired April 7th, 2025.

Pancho was a warrior, a guardian, and a beloved companion to Captain Kirlin.

He wasn’t just a working dog; he was a part of our family, dedicating his life to keeping our community safe. During these years, Pancho was utilized in hundreds of narcotics deployments, tracking suspects and protecting his handler as well as the rest of the department.

Pancho was a gentle giant that enjoyed attention. Even in his final days, Pancho’s loyalty and personality never wavered.

He was more than just a dog; he was family, a partner, and a protector.

Heroes don’t always wear badges. Some walk on four legs, serving in silence and leaving behind a legacy of loyalty that never fades. Pancho’s courage will forever walk beside those who loved him.

Rest east, Pancho. Your watch is over and your pain is gone. We’ll take it from here.
