🚔Wheatland History Spotlight🚔
In April 1914, Wheatland General Hospital opened its doors to serve the growing community. The hospital initially housed 15 beds, a capacity it quickly outgrew as demand for medical services increased.
For its time, the facility was remarkably modern, featuring an X-ray machine, a fully equipped laboratory with microscopes, blood pressure devices, and nitrous oxide-oxygen anesthesia equipment. Each patient room was equipped with a telephone line and an electric fan, providing comforts that were considered advanced for the era.
Located on the northwest corner of Water Street and 9th Street, the hospital's operating room was constructed with white enamel surfaces to promote cleanliness and sanitation. In 1929, Wheatland General Hospital further expanded its services with the purchase of its first ambulance, a Reo Speedwagon.
Today, a mural commemorating Wheatland General Hospital can be found on the south side of the present-day Frontier Furniture building, located at 601 9th Street, serving as a reminder of this important chapter in Wheatland's history.
