Montgomery County is now under a drought watch issued by the Drought Coordination Committee of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG). The regional drought watch applies to more than one million residents in Montgomery County and over six million residents across Metropolitan Washington.

Here are some useful tips for Montgomery County residents and businesses on conserving water during drought conditions and year-round:

1️⃣ Reduce shower length to under five minutes.
2️⃣ Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and shaving.
3️⃣ Wash full loads of dishes and clothes.
4️⃣ Fix any plumbing leaks – especially toilets and faucets.
5️⃣Monitor watering lawns, plants and shrubs.
6️⃣ Sweep sidewalks and driveways (instead of using a hose).
7️⃣ Consider a commercial car wash, instead of washing at home.

Voluntary water conservation can help the region and your wallet!

The Be Cool, Save Lives campaign is helping residents, workers and employers understand the warning signs of heat illness and spot the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. We want everyone who lives and works in Montgomery County, and especially those who work in extreme heat conditions, to be aware of heat dangers and to know your rights to water, shade, and rest.

The campaign is organizing two upcoming opportunities to learn about how to keep your family and friends safe from extreme heat, and what employers need to know to stay in compliance with Maryland's heat stress standards. Both events will be virtual:

Extreme Heat Safety Campaign Kickoff: Protecting Your Health and Your Rights

It is time — for summer fish monitoring!

Fish play a vital role in helping us assess the health of streams. In Montgomery County, we classify fish into three groups based on how well they can live in different types of water:

1. Highly Sensitive Fish
2. Sensitive
3. Pollution Tolerant Fish

By studying fish communities over time, we can learn a lot about the past and present state of streams. We utilize electrofishing to study the diversity, population size and health of fish in streams. Once identified and studied, the fish are safely release back into their natural environment, contributing to our understanding of stream ecosystems.

Tick season is a growing summer health concern here in Montgomery County and across Maryland. Emergency department visits for tick bites are sharply increasing this year, and Lyme disease cases statewide have nearly doubled since 2020. With peak tick activity occurring in May and June, it is critical to protect your family and pets when spending time outdoors.

Ticks frequently hide in leaf litter, tall grass, shrubs, and wooded areas. You can significantly lower your risk by acting before, during, and after outdoor activities.

Before you head out:
Use an EPA-registered insect repellent.
Treat your clothing and gear with 0.5 percent permethrin.
Wear long sleeves and tuck your pants into your socks.
Use vet-approved tick prevention products on your pets.
While you are outdoors:
Stick to clearly marked paths.
Avoid brushing against tall grass and heavy brush.
After you return indoors:
Check your entire body carefully, paying special attention to the scalp, ears, underarms, waist, and behind the knees.
Do a thorough tick check on your pets.
Take a shower as soon as possible.
Wash your clothing and dry it on high heat.

If you find a tick on your body or your pet, remove it promptly with fine-tipped tweezers, gripping it close to the skin. Burning, suffocating (with Vaseline), or squeezing the tick are not effective means of removal and can cause the tick to release more infected saliva into the bloodstream.

Contact your health care provider or veterinarian if symptoms like a rash, fever, or fatigue develop in the days or weeks following a possible bite. Learn more at cdc.gov/ticks.
