Egg Carton Method: The Fastest Way to Plant Bulbs

Stop digging fifty little holes.
This simple kitchen hack lets you plant dozens (even hundreds) of bulbs at once — with perfect spacing every time.

How It Works

Step 1: Dig One Trench
Dig a wide trench to the proper depth — about 3× the height of the bulb. Level the bottom.

Step 2: Set the Spacing
Lay cardboard egg cartons side by side in the trench. Drop one bulb into each cup, pointy end up.

Step 3: Cover & Water
Backfill with soil so bulbs are covered by 4–6 inches. Water deeply to settle soil and start breaking down the cartons.

Step 4: Let Nature Finish the Job
By spring, the cartons are gone — and you’re left with a perfectly spaced carpet of blooms 🌼

Important Material Rules

- Use paper pulp or cardboard cartons only
- Never use Styrofoam or plastic
- Cut a small slit in the bottom of each cup to help roots reach soil faster

Best Bulbs for This Method

Perfect fit:
Tulips, daffodils, crocus, grape hyacinth (muscari), scilla

Skip these:
Giant alliums — they need more room than an egg cup allows

When to Plant

Plant in fall once soil temps drop below 60°F

Water right after planting — moisture speeds carton breakdown

Simple tools. Smart spacing. Big spring payoff.
Sometimes the easiest tricks are the ones hiding in your kitchen drawer 🌷

That “foam blob” on a branch isn’t trash.
It’s next season’s pest control team waiting through winter.

Praying mantis egg cases are one of the most overlooked forms of garden wildlife protection. If they get tossed in yard waste, an entire hatch is lost before spring even starts.

• Look for tan, bumpy cases on twigs, fences, and dead stems
• Keep the branch in your garden or place it upright in a shrub
• Avoid bringing it indoors (warm temps can trigger early hatch)
• Let nature release them in spring, right when pests appear

A messy branch today can mean fewer aphids, flies, and mosquitoes tomorrow. 🌿🦗

Hello, I'm the Opossum in your garage 🐾
- I came in because it's 12°F outside and I have no body fat
- I am not aggressive—that hissing means I'm terrified
- I eat 5,000 ticks per season (you're welcome)
- I am nearly immune to rabies—my body temperature is too low
- I will leave on my own if you leave the garage door cracked tonight

Please refrain from contacting animal control. I am a vital Lyme disease prevention unit seeking refuge from the cold.
