This week is Ohio’s Severe Weather Awareness Week and today we are highlighting Thunderstorm & Lightning Safety.

“When thunder roars, go indoors!” If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move immediately into a substantial building or a hard-topped vehicle and stay there until 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder. Avoid open areas, tall trees, and metal objects. Once inside, stay away from windows, plumbing, and electrical appliances. Severe thunderstorms can also produce damaging winds, heavy rain, and lightning, so stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings and alerts.

Scioto County EMA will be participating in the Ohio Statewide Tornado Drill today, March 18th at 9:50 AM, weather permitting. Tornado sirens in select areas of the county may sound as part of the test. Scioto County EMA will test the CodeRED emergency notification system as well. This is only a drill, however; Ohioans are encouraged to practice their emergency sheltering plans. Schools, households, and businesses are also encouraged to practice their tornado drills and emergency plans.

[12:00 PM] A New Tornado Watch has been issued, valid until 6 PM.

⚠️ STORM UPDATE (1030am) - Tornado Watches have now been extended to Pike and Scioto counties in Ohio. EXPECT them to be extended eastward (it's a proper precaution given what this system has already done).

If you find yourself under a watch, it's not the time for hikes and bikes, fishing or golfing. Always keep a charged cellphone with you or dont go out at all.

The area I'm most concerned about right now would be the southern edge of the storm cells, and the favorable air below it. This zone itself will be lifting northeast in the coming hours. Sunshine will not be our friend in this case, as it would help power those storms. The warmest hours of the day are still ahead.
