White Oak EMS nationally recognized for its commitment to quality care for heart attacks and strokes.

White Oak Emergency Medical Service has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® EMS GOLD achievement award for its commitment to offering rapid, research-based care to people experiencing the most severe form of heart attack and stroke.

Emergency medical services staff can begin treatment when they arrive — up to an hour sooner than if someone goes to the hospital by car. EMS staff are also trained to provide resuscitation efforts to someone whose heart has stopped. People who arrive by ambulance may also receive faster treatment at the hospital.

Mission: Lifeline EMS® is the American Heart Association's national initiative to advance the system of care for patients with high-risk, time-sensitive disease states, such as severe heart attacks and strokes. The program helps reduce barriers to prompt treatment — starting from when 911 is called, to EMS transport and continuing through hospital treatment and discharge. Optimal care for heart attack and stroke patients takes coordination between the individual prehospital providers and health care systems.

The Mission: Lifeline EMS achievement award focuses on agencies’ on-scene care, bringing to the forefront the collaboration and contributions to patient care for prehospital providers

White Oak EMS returned to service Sunday after attending the funeral services for Paramedic Nick Theofilis. We wish to extend our deepest appreciation for all of the support and assistance we received during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to Nick's family, friends, and loved ones.

We would like to especially thank the agencies that covered for us while we attended Nick's services: Collier EMS, MRTSA, Baldwin EMS, North Huntingdon Rescue 8, Economy EMS, Fayette EMS, SouthEast Regional EMS, Guardian Angel Ambulance Services, and New Kensington EMS. We would also like to thank UPMC Prehospital Care for coordinating coverage while we were out of service, Rainbow Volunteer Fire Department for assisting with the mourning bunting of our trucks, STAT MedEvac for visiting with therapy dogs for our crews, and the great outpouring of support we received from our brothers and sisters in public safety.

Our hearts are broken this morning as we announce the passing of Paramedic Nick Theofilis who was involved in a tragic ambulance accident overnight. Nick was a full-time Paramedic at Penn Hills EMS and also worked part-time for White Oak EMS.

Nick worked as a full-time EMT for White Oak EMS from March 2019 - March 2022 while he attended Paramedic school. Upon graduation and fulfilling his dream of becoming a Paramedic, Nick was anxious to return to the community of Penn Hills where he grew up to give-back and serve his fellow community members. Nick called White Oak his “second home” and remained on our part-time roster. During his time at White Oak EMS, Nick fell in love with many of our local restaurants and enjoyed serving the residents of the borough.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Nick’s family locally, in Greece, and to our brothers and sisters at Penn Hills EMS

Nick Theofilis, Paramedic & friend, taken from us too soon...
