Westchester Black Political Conference

Westchester Black Political Conference The goal of Westchester Black Political Conference is to create a more equitable and secure future for Black communities through public policy.

If Black Communities want to prosper just like all other communities, there must be total participation in the political process. Personal responsibility is not enough. There must be Responsible Public Policy to go hand in hand in uplifting our communities. It is one thing to complain about the outcome of an election and the subsequent policies that are developed as a result of the voting process

but it is another to stand up and take action. We all have lost trust in the reckless decisions that are made at the local, state, and national levels. However, changing the political process in our local, state, and national political arenas will make a difference in our communities and for ALL communities. The Westchester County Black Political Caucus recognizes and accepts our mission from Dr. Martin Luther King’s Jr.’s Poor Peoples Campaign. Dr. King was unwavering in his belief that the “triple threats to humanity” of poverty, racism, and militarism needed to be challenged at all cost. We are also born out of the historical first National Black Political Assembly (NBPA), formerly known as the Gary Convention, was held on March 10, 1972 in Gary Indiana. The NBPA gathered around ten thousand African-Americans to discuss and advocate for black communities that undergo significant economic and social crisis.[3] Part of their goal was to raise the number of black politicians elected to office, increase representation, and create an agenda for fundamental change.

As the 2024 presidential race heats up, we’re witnessing a troubling trend in how liberal media and political figures portray Black men. Across the political landscape, Black men are increasingly criticized, scrutinized, and even belittled for their political choices—particularly when those choices don’t align with the Democratic Party. This election has underscored a long-standing tendency among the left to scapegoat Black men, questioning their political judgment and diminishing their autonomy in ways that are both emasculating and dismissive.

The recent interview between Ta-Nehisi Coates and CBS Mornings anchor Tony Dokoupil has sparked an essential conversation about whether Black voices have the right to speak out on issues of global injustice, particularly in Palestine. For many Black Americans, witnessing oppression abroad feels deeply personal, resonating with the painful historical struggles we’ve endured in our own country. Coates’ reflections on Palestine—and his choice to share the voices of Palestinians—echo a long-standing tradition of solidarity between the Black American experience and the Palestinian fight for justice

In a scathing statement released Wednesday, a national organization of Black law enforcement professionals expressed a vote of no confidence in New York State Attorney General Letitia James, citing her handling of a police shooting case in New Rochelle.

The organization, Blacks In Law Enforcement of America (BLEA), took issue with the Attorney General’s office’s decision not to bring charges in the 2023 shooting death of Jarrel Garris, an unarmed Black man who was experiencing a mental health crisis when New Rochelle police killed him.

For many Black youth, the traditional path of a four-year college education has become a financial burden rather than a stepping stone. Student loan debt disproportionately affects Black graduates, often delaying or derailing their ability to build wealth. In contrast, vocational training for trades typically costs less and takes less time, allowing for quicker entry into the workforce with minimal debt.

The earning potential in these fields is significant and far exceeds the current average earnings for Black men. Last year, master plumbers saw their median pay rise to $82,700, marking a 21% increase from the previous year. Certified electricians earn even more, with annual salaries ranging from $74,000 to $143,500. These figures are especially notable compared to the average salary of Black men, which is only $43,000 per year or $828 per week. Additionally, a Black man with a bachelor’s degree earns an average of $55,000 annually, while a Black man with a master’s degree earns an average of $72,000 annua

In the face of America’s growing skilled labor shortage, an often overlooked opportunity for economic advancement is emerging—one that could particularly benefit Black youth and communities. As a longtime advocate for financial empowerment in Black communities, we should seriously consider promo...

The Honorable Herman Keith’s passing closes a transformative chapter in Westchester County’s history. His enduring legacy shines brightest through the lives of young people, especially young Black men, for whom he was a tireless advocate and inspiration. Keith personified Black excellence – intelligent, eloquent, and influential in both appearance and speech. His commanding presence in positions of power and authority set a powerful example for young Black men of my era, offering a vivid illustration of what they could aspire to become. Keith’s life and career provided a crucial model of success and leadership at a time when such examples were sorely needed.

With profound sorrow and deep respect, we announce the passing of the Honorable Herman Keith, former County Legislator and trailblazer, on June 22, 2024. At the age of 88, Mr. Keith’s courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease came to an end, leaving our community bereft of a true pioneer and ch...

The apparent silence from much of Westchester’s Black leadership in the face of these contentious campaign tactics represents a concerning shift in community advocacy. This lack of public disagreement, particularly from Black pastors, marks a significant departure from the Black church’s historical role as a pillar of civil rights activism and community representation. Such silence could have far-reaching implications for the future of civil rights and equity in the Black communities of Westchester County. It potentially signals a weakening of traditional support systems that have long been crucial in confronting racial injustice and promoting Black interests.

This shift may erode trust in established leadership, leaving a vacuum in advocacy that could slow progress on critical issues affecting the Black community. Young activists and community members might feel unsupported or disillusioned, potentially decreasing civic engagement. The absence of solid and unified voices against divisive political tactics could also encourage those who employ such strategies, making it harder to combat racial stereotyping and discrimination in future political discourse

The recent congressional race for District 16, between incumbent Jamaal Bowman and challenger George Latimer, has set new precedents in campaign financing. AIPAC and other Republican-funded PACs spent over 20 million to unseat the first Black Congressman in CD16, highlighting complex racial dynamics...
