Book Clubs & Lit Circles: Setting Up Choice Reading in the Secondary ELAR Classroom (6-12): Choice reading or student selected texts is an important skill in the Secondary ELAR TEKS. But how is this accomplished? How do students know how to choose texts? And how do teachers hold students accountable? In this session, participants will explore the importance of choice reading and how to set up a framework in their classroom through books clubs and literature circles.

Connecting Reading & Writing in the Secondary ELAR Classroom (6-12): In this session, participants will explore the framework of connecting reading and writing in the Secondary ELAR classroom. They will dive deep into the process of using mentor texts to examine and analyze author's craft from the perspective of a reader and a writer. Participants will leave the session with a plan for integrating reading and writing through mentor texts.

They will understand the importance of analyzing rubrics and creating checklists to set students up for success, explore various genre characteristics and author’s crafts moves, and experience the writing process by creating an exemplar to deepen their understanding of the effective implementation of writing instruction.
