December was a very busy and rewarding month for our department! We were grateful to be part of the annual Wreath Auction organized by the Whitehall Saddle Club, with the live auction hosted at the Mint Bar. The event was a huge success, and we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated, donated, and showed their continued support. Your generosity and encouragement mean more to us than words can express.

For the month of December we focused on communications training, learning more about our radios and the challenges of clearly and accurately describing what we see to someone who cannot see it themselves. During a hands-on drill, firefighters in full PPE walked on a treadmill while describing an arrangement of shapes over the radio to another firefighter in a separate room, who then had to accurately draw the shapes based solely on the information provided. This exercise emphasized the importance of clear, precise communication under physical and mental stress and proved to be a very successful and valuable training.

As we move into the New Year, we want to wish everyone a safe, healthy, and happy year ahead. Thank you for your continued trust and support—we look forward to serving our community in the months to come. 🚒✨

Friendly reminder: December 1st marks the start of the Montana Department of Environmental Quality winter debris burning period. If you’re planning to burn slash piles over 48" anytime between Dec. 1 and Feb. 28, you’ll need to apply for and activate a DEQ permit, plus your county burn permit each day you burn.

🎃🚒 Seasonal Safety & Training Recap! ❄️🔥

This month, our firefighters have transitioned from wildland fire to hazardous road season as the weather begins to change. With winter on the way, roads can quickly become slick and unpredictable — please take extra care when driving!

Winter Driving Safety Tips:
✅ Slow down and allow extra travel time.
✅ Increase following distance for more stopping space.
✅ Keep your gas tank at least half full.
✅ Check that your tires, brakes, and wipers are in good condition.
✅ Carry an emergency kit with blankets, water, and a flashlight.

In addition to responding to calls, our firefighters continued training this month with:
🏫 Fire Prevention Week at Cardwell School – firefighters stopped by to teach students about fire safety and what firefighters do. It’s always a pleasure to see the excitement and curiosity from the kids!
🚒 Ladder rescue drills – practicing safe climbing, victim removal, and coordination between crews.
👨‍🚒 PPE training – reviewing how to properly assemble, wear, and inspect gear to ensure safety and readiness. The crew wrapped up training with a friendly game of dodgeball — in full PPE!

We also celebrated Halloween at the fire station with chili, warm drinks, treats, and a few tricks! Thank you to everyone who stopped by and joined in the fun — it was great seeing so many community members! 🎃👻

Stay safe, drive carefully, and we’ll see you around the community this winter! 🚒❄️
