Library Director
Whitehall Free Library – Whitehall, NY
Job Summary:
The Director of the Library will be responsible for a variety of administrative, supervisory, and clerical tasks to include but not limited to planning, organizing, and implementing the collections, programs, and services of the library. The Director is responsible for maintaining a library environment that is safe and welcoming to all. This is a part-time position. The Director is expected to work 15-18 hours a week. Any time over 18 hours will need to have approval by the Board of Trustees beforehand. Additional hours for community events as negotiated with the Board will be compensated at the current rate.
Requirements:
The Director must be able to carry out physical demands of the job at a medium level, including lifting and moving objects up to fifty (50) pounds.
Accountability:
Directly accountable to the Board of Trustees, the Director will carry out the policies established by the Board of Trustees and will perform regular duties independently.
Duties and responsibilities, include but are not limited to:
• Direct all operations of the library. Implement library policies and direct staff in carrying them out.
• Maintain a safe, welcoming, comfortable, and secure environment for patrons, including those with special needs.
• Plan, initiate, and supervise improvements in operations, procedures, and staff organization.
• Determine how the library can best meet the needs of the community and coordinate proposed improvements with the Board of Trustees.
• Supervise the implementation of new programs and services.
• Promote the collections, resources, and programs of the library to the Town of Whitehall, including on social media and the library website.
• Supervise the performance of all staff, including volunteers, and provide guidance, assistance, and training as necessary.
• Evaluate all paid staff in writing annually.
• Participate in professional development activities and networking events for librarians.
• Oversee the collection of books, media, resources, and artifacts contained in the library. Select items to update the collection, and review items which are outdated or not used and coordinate their removal and disposition in accordance with library policy.
• Oversee the circulation process, including inter-library loan.
• Monitor and document donations to the library collection.
• Oversee maintenance of the building and property; coordinate necessary work needed with the Board of Trustees.
• Work with the Board Treasurer to ensure that bills are paid in a timely manner.
• Prepare and present a budget recommendation to the Board annually, including needed upgrades to equipment and resources.
• In consultation with the library Board of Trustees identify and plan for the future needs of the library and develop and implement long-range goals.
• File all necessary reports with the SALS.
• Ensure that Board of Trustees meetings are legally posted in the library and online at least 24 hours in advance of each meeting.
• Carry out the flow of administrative work, including maintaining petty cash records, opening mail, maintaining the staff schedule, preparing materials for the treasurer, updating the library social media presence, and other duties, as necessary.

• Knowledge of the philosophy and techniques of library service

• Demonstrated knowledge of library materials and resources
• Creativity to develop and implement library programs and services
• Ability to communicate both orally and in writing
• Employs management techniques effectively in directing, planning, organizing, staffing, coordinating, budgeting, and evaluating the library's operation
Education:
• Associate degree Required
Experience:
• Familiarity with Library Environment
• Supervisory Experience
• Customer Service
Preferred:
• Experience in library services
• Experience with facilities management.
• Experience in accounting and budgeting.
• Experience in management of automated library information management systems.
