โฌ‡ WHAT GOES DOWN, MUST (UNFORTUNATELY) DRIVE FEES UP โฌ†

When a toilet is flushed, or any other source of wastewater enters the public sewer system, most of us never think about the journey it takes before reaching its final destination. Wastewater travels through an extensive collection system, including pump stations and sewer lines, before ultimately arriving at a treatment plant.

Readington Township is served by two wastewater treatment authorities: the Readington/Lebanon Sewerage Authority (RLSA) and the Raritan Township Municipal Utilities Authority (RTMUA). Each authority establishes its own treatment rates, and based on the Township's wastewater usage, Readington receives bills for the services provided.

Like nearly every other service, the cost of operating and maintaining this critical infrastructure has increased significantly over the years. Despite these rising expenses, sewer fees for residents served by the public sewer system increased by only $60 over the past 16 years. As a result, the Township experienced a deficit of more than $62,000 last year for wastewater treatment costs alone.

The Township remains committed to maintaining a reliable, environmentally responsible, and cost-effective sewer system while balancing the need to keep rates as affordable as possible for the beginning users. To help offset increasing costs for equipment, labor, maintenance, repairs, and wastewater treatment, the Township implemented a sewer rate adjustment of $220 for a total of $700 per unit in 2026. This adjustment will help ensure the long-term sustainability of the public sewer system and allow the Township to continue providing safe and dependable wastewater services.

๐Ÿ’ง Know what's in your water. Pass on the plastics.

Choosing reusable water bottles, shopping bags, and food containers instead of single-use plastics helps reduce plastic waste that can end up in our streams, rivers, lakes, and oceans.

Every small choice makes a difference. Protect our waterways today for a cleaner, healthier tomorrow.
