Our Fire Department, and the Village of Whitelaw, looks very different than it did a century ago. Today we celebrate our past and our present. Those who shaped our organization, our village, and our community to those who lead the way to make Whitelaw a safer and better place. Thank you to the members of the Whitelaw Fire Department - past, present, and future - for answering the call (the bell, the siren, and the pager) for the past century.

So, today, we celebrate 100 years of our Whitelaw Fire Department. Join us at the Community Park, starting at 11 am and ending at dusk with fireworks.

The Whitelaw Volunteer Department began in 1926 as a fire brigade, protecting the residents and flourishing businesses of a growing young village. This group of volunteers were called into service for the community but also the nearby tuberculosis sanitarium and farms. Today, the department is a modern, technologically equipped workforce capable of handling any emergency. Join us to celebrate our 100th Anniversary on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at the Whitelaw Community Park.

Where were you when the Whitelaw Bar and Bowl had its disastrous fire?

A large fire took place at the Whitelaw Bar and Bowl on Menasha Avenue in June, 1994. It included firefighters from six area departments. A large crowd of onlookers was drawn to the fire.

Join us to celebrate our 100th Anniversary on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at the Whitelaw Community Park. To honor this milestone anniversary, there will be a compiled history book for sale on our WFD's first 100 years. Be sure to get your copy during the celebration.

Check out this throwback to the WFD's annual meeting in 1974. Were you there?

Join us to celebrate our 100th Anniversary on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at the Whitelaw Community Park.

Highlights include:
🚒Local History: The Manitowoc County Historical Society will display some history of the Village of Whitelaw and the Fire Department.
🚒 Live Fire Extinguisher Training: Participants will receive a brief lesson and the procedures of using an extinguisher and then have an opportunity to try their skills.
🚒 Children's fire safety booth: Children will be able to earn prizes for answering questions about fire safety.
🚒 Entertainment: Valders High School Jazz from 11:30 to 12:30; DJ Jim Braun from 12:30 to 4 pm; Fire On High from 4:30 to 8 pm
🚒 Fire Fighter recognition: Around 4 pm, we will be taking a moment to recognize both past and present members of the Whitelaw Volunteer Fire Department.

Enjoy brats, burgers, our famous ribeye fireman steak sandwiches and homemade desserts. Fireworks at dusk.

From the Archives: Department Encourages Chimney Checks, October 1961

On October 13, 1961, the Manitowoc Herald Times wrote “Howard Brunner, fire chief of the Whitelaw Fire Department, urged area residents as part of fire prevention week to have their chimneys cleaned before bad weather sets in and necessary cleaning equipment can be obtained from him.” “He urged checking of fire extinguishers and connections in fuel oil installations or space heaters. Other suggestions he made were having an evacuation plan for each member of the family and conducting a fire drill and disposal of flammable material that may have accumulated.”
