Today, members of the Whitelaw Fire Department had the honor of participating in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. Each step was taken in remembrance of the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001, along with all the lives lost that day. This climb is not just an event—it’s a way to ensure that the courage, service, and sacrifice of those heroes are never forgotten. We are proud to carry their memory forward and stand united with our brothers and sisters in the fire service across the nation.

🔥 Live Fire Flashover Training – Preparing for the Worst 🔥

Earlier this morning, firefighters from multiple area departments came together for an intense Flashover Simulator Training. This live-fire training provided firsthand experience with the extreme heat and fire behavior that can lead to flashovers—one of the most dangerous situations a firefighter can face.

Through controlled burns, firefighters observed fire growth, smoke conditions, and the warning signs of a flashover. This hands-on education is crucial for improving firefighter safety, decision-making, and survival in real-life fire situations.

A huge shoutout to Branch Station for providing a much-needed meal after training!

Thank you to NWTC Public Safety Education for putting on this great training and all the departments who participated in making this training possible. We train like we fight, so we’re always ready when our communities need us.

Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash Investigation in Manitowoc County

On March 6, 2025, at 11:33 pm, Deputies from the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 6500 block of Homestead Road, within the Township of Manitowoc Rapids, for a report of a single-vehicle crash. The caller advised that the vehicle was on fire.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2019 Ford Fusion was traveling eastbound on Homestead Road when it left the roadway, entered the south ditch, and struck a tree. The vehicle caught fire, which was extinguished by responding fire personnel. The driver, a 21-year-old woman from rural Manitowoc, was the sole occupant of the vehicle, and she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The incident is under active investigation. No further details are available at this time.

On behalf of the Sheriff’s Office, we would like to offer our deepest condolences to those affected by this traffic incident.

We want to thank the Manitowoc County Joint Dispatch Center, Branch Fire Department, Whitelaw Fire Department, City of Manitowoc Fire and Rescue, Manitowoc County Coroner’s Office, and Hi-Way 42 Garage for their assistance.

Dan Hartwig, Sheriff
Manitowoc County
