Ms. Sunny, a hard working chicken of the 509 BW here at Whiteman AFB, suffered a raccoon attack recently. Sunny’s owner approached us to see if we could help make something to protect her wounded head and neck while she recovers. The team came together and made several 3D printed prototypes out of multiple materials within an afternoon and test fit them the next morning. Sunny is on the mend and the helmet makes her surprisingly sleepy. Her new identity is Kylo Hen!
No problem is too big or small for the men and women of the 509 BW to solve when one of our own needs support.

Spring has arrived here in Missouri, which means it's time to restart our Whiteman Bike-Share program. Airmen can get in some fitness and vitamin D while quickly transiting around base by "checking out" the bikes that are positioned around the base. Don't forget to grab a helmet before you go!

Hope Shepherd stopped by the innovation office to expand her knowledge of laser etching on the Glow forge. She created a piece of art that she intends to gift to someone for Christmas. Also while at the Stealthwerx lab, Hope picked up some valuable 3D printing knowledge that could be used for rapid prototyping in the future. Much like Hope, you could also bring your ideas to life. You bring the supplies and we can bridge the gap with knowledge and equipment.

We at Stealthwerx have fielded a new bike share program to support the airmen living in our dorms. These bikes provide airmen without vehicles access to transportation to work and any other base service. The bikes are free and helmets are provided along with an easy to use QR code system to allow users to sign-in/out bicycles and report any maintenance issues instantly.
Whiteman airmen, we hear you! We seek to provide capabilities and resources that benefit you, and most importantly, that you want and need. Stealthwerx is innovating in the area of Airmen quality of life! Stop by the dorms and check out a bike today.
We needed a tool, so we printed a tool. These were printed on our own 3D printers here at Stealthwerx inside the Whiteman Library. Come check it out!
The heart is a muscular organ which pumps blood through the blood vessels of the circulatory system. It pumps 2,000 gallons of blood every day and is divided into four chambers. The Golden Snitch is the third and smallest ball used in Quidditch in the Harry Potter books. It is a walnut-sized, gold-colored sphere with silver wings. It flies around the Quidditch field at high speeds, sometimes pausing and hovering in place. We wanted to challenge ourselves to 3D print something very small with complex and delicate shapes. Dragon 2 is a class of reusable spacecraft developed and manufactured by American aerospace manufacturer SpaceX as the successor to Dragon 1, a reusable cargo and crew spacecraft. Come see our Dragon Capsule 3D printed in ABS plastic (the same stuff LEGO is made of)!
The B-1 was first envisioned in the 1960s as a platform that would combine the Mach 2 speed of the B-58 Hustler with the range and payload of the B-52, meant to ultimately replace both bombers. Come see the B-1 as a 3D print!
The First Term Airmen Course is geared toward preparing incoming, first-term Airmen for their jump from the structured world of training to the more flexible world of the operational Air Force.

Your Whiteman Innovation Team was invited back to AFWERX Vegas Hub this week. Day one was a discussion about getting the right pilots in the right platform, reducing or eliminating wash outs, DORs, culture misalignments, and ultimately retention, before pilot candidates begin! This begins with collecting the right data, but there were some awesome ideas/solutions tossed around to include a Pilot Candidate Combine!
Your Whiteman Innovations Team had a great opportunity to travel to Offutt AFB to present an Air Refueling simulator for their E-4B pilots. The Tanker Operations Program (TOP) is a VR flight simulator that trains pilots of multiple aircraft on air refueling procedures for the KC-135 and KC-10. TOP is still in development and is currently being spearheaded by Whiteman AFB, Offutt AFB, and Barksdale AFB.
A huge thanks to John and Matt from Spectral Labs for traveling to Whiteman to demo their RAVEN ETS program! Their technology and program was a huge hit and spurred a lot of discussion at all levels about how to use VR for everyday training in both Maintenance and Ops!
We had a great turnout out at Friday’s Innovation workshop. We had Airmen show up with outstanding and Actionable ideas and some great cross talk to help solve problems for different AFSC’s “pain points.” Here are some of the ideas brought forward by your community!
Your Whiteman AFB Innovations team had a very productive week at the AFWERX conference in Vegas. We expanded our network to agencies both in and out of the DoD, which will help us leverage success in future projects!
