Former U.S. Army Captain William D. Swenson and his column were ambushed on an operation in Afghanistan, near the Pakistan border. Swenson ran through enemy fire during this ambush to rescue the wounded; he brought a severely injured sergeant to a helicopter for medical evacuation. He bent over kissed him on his head before returning to save more.

Great leaders have this deep sense of love for their team; they are willing to sacrifice their life so their team may gain. This is what leadership is all about; it has nothing to do with elevating yourself on the backs of your people or, worst, tearing people down to make yourself look or feel good. That's not leadership; that's not even basic human respect.

When you are called to lead, you are called to serve, and you must be willing to place the needs of others above your own. When you are called a leader, you must ensure that your people are inspired and motivated every day to make a difference. That's what we call leadership, and that's what real leaders do.

03/04/2022

Many great leaders identify their ability to inspire as the single most critical leadership skill needed to help people become the very best version of themselves. The ability to infuse energy, passion, commitment, and connection to an organization’s mission and direction is essential in any growing company or country.

But you must be very careful about the people who call themselves leaders, especially those with Pseudo - Leadership tendencies. They use fear, intimidation, or manipulation as strategies to get people to produce, but none of those tactics has any place in leadership, absolutely none; if anyone uses them as strategies to get people to work, that person has no place sitting in any leadership position.

Many of these people are only concerned about their well-being, nothing else. Leadership is all about serving and inspiring people to become the best versions of themselves while helping people achieve things they never thought possible.

What makes you a leader worth following?

Your position on the org chart doesn't make you a leader. Your title doesn't make you a leader. Leadership has nothing to do with your social status, your bank account, or where you reside. It's all about one life inspiring and motivating another to become the very best version of themselves.

As John Quincy Adams puts it, "if your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader."

Taken from Leadership First

Servant leadership is a concept that many don’t understand. The words “leader” or “leadership” are often thrown out as buzz words by management without a true understanding of what it means to be a leader. Being a leader does not mean you are simply the boss or in charge. It means that you put the team and those that work with you, for you, and through you first. It means the success of the team is because of the team. And the failure of the team rests on your shoulders. It means sacrificing yourself for the betterment of the team. It means leading from the front and not because you want the glory, but instead because you want your team to succeed.

I’m my various careers, I have worked for some amazing leaders as well as some terrible managers. What stood out about the leaders was their honest and sincere desire to see their team succeed. Their willingness to sacrifice their own success for that of their team. Their desire for the accolades for a job well done to go to their team and their selfless nature. Also, bearing the burden when the team didn’t succeed to shield the team.

If these simple statements do not fit your “leadership style” it means you’re a manager. Don’t be a manager, be a leader.

When you are called to lead, you are called to serve.

Great leaders have this deep-seated love for their team; they are willing to sacrifice their life so their team may gain. This is what leadership is all about; it has nothing to do with elevating yourself on the backs of your people or, worst yet, tearing people down to make yourself look or feel good.

You must be willing to place the needs of others above your own. When you are called a leader, you must ensure that your people are inspired and motivated every day to make a difference. That's leadership, and that's what real leaders do.
