The AFMS - Whiteman - 509th Medical Group located on Whiteman Air Force Base recently has earned The Joint Commission's (TJC) Gold Seal of Approval for accreditation by demonstrating high performance standards, and quality patient care. This accreditation shows Whiteman Air Force Base's commitment to providing reliable, safe, and quality health care.
For over 70 years, TJC has evaluated and accredited nearly 4,000 health care organizations and programs annually in the United States. It is an independent, non-profit organization, and the nation's standard for accrediting health care.
At the conclusion of their survey, the commission identified fourteen items in the 509 MDG for improvement The 509 MDG has already corrected a majority of the findings, and has a plan to ensure the remaining open items will be reconciled within 9 months. Ms. Angie Taran, Quality Manager of the 509 MDG states, "We have a collaborative team of experts from the clinic's executive staff and already have a plan in motion."
The surveyors applauded Whiteman's staff for their commitment to the highest quality of patient care, recognizing the teamwork, facility cleanliness, and clinical competency throughout the facility. The hard work of our Striker Medics shined through as the inspectors praised the staff for modeling an exceptional Patient Centered Medical Home. Despite the unprecedented challenges we faced since the last accreditation, our team aggressively worked to sustain operations centered around our patients.
"Our teamwork was evident as we performed exceptionally well," said Col Mark Reynolds, Commander of the 509 MDG. "The majority of the findings were low to moderate risk and fixes have already been implemented." Our organization had several superior performers and we thank TJC for acknowledging our "best practices."
Reminder the AFMS - Whiteman - 509th Medical Group will be closed from 7:30 - 9:30 am on Wednesday, 20 July.
Heat illnesses and injuries are no fun! What is heat-related illness? Heat-related illness, or hyperthermia, is a condition resulting from exposure to extreme heat where the body becomes unable to properly cool, resulting in a rapid rise in body temperature. The evaporation of sweat is the normal way to remove body heat, but, when the humidity is high, sweat does not evaporate as quickly. This, in turn, prevents the body from releasing heat quickly. Prompt treatment of heat-related illnesses with aggressive fluid replacement and cooling of core body temperature is critical to reducing illness and preventing death. Be safe when taking part in outside activities and remember to hydrate!
