Today’s Special Exhibitor is the Fort Worth Aviation Museum.
The Fort Worth Aviation Museum tells the story of aviation in North Texas including civilian, military, and commercial. Starting from the first flight of an aircraft from Fort Worth in 1911 by Roland Garros, the museum documents the historic aviation milestones of Fort Worth and North Texas including the creation of Air Force Plant Four during World War II and the various airplanes produced at that plant. The museum’s location at Meacham airport also allows visitors to see airplanes flying to and from the airport while they get up close to our display airplanes outside. Visitors of all ages will find stories, airplanes, and artifacts that will give them new
knowledge and inspire them to learn more.
Founded in 1999 as the Forward Air Controller’s Museum, the Fort Worth Aviation Museum has grown in scope and size since. While continuing to tell the Forward Air Controller story, the museum now includes North Texas Aviation history and has been at Meacham airport since its founding moving to the current location in 2009. The mission is giving wings to youth and community through our aviation roots. We preserve, inspire, and educate. The museum accomplishes this mission by enacting the vision which is To celebrate and showcase the people and aviation accomplishments of North Texas, in a museum and science center that can
preserve and display our heritage, educate our community, and inspire our young people to stay in school and achieve their full potential.
The aircraft collection consists of 36 aircraft including the F-14, F-18, OV-10, AH-1, and many others. The museum also has thousands of artifacts ranging from as small as lapel pins to as big as a Flight simulator in a truck trailer. The interior museum includes exhibits on aviation milestones in Fort Worth such as the opening of Air Force Plant 4 and the beginning of military aviation training in Fort Worth. Exhibits also tell the story of Forward Air Controllers who fly in combat zones and guide other airplanes to targets. There are also flight simulators that visitors can fly.
This year the museum completed the Restoration of YF-16 #2. This aircraft was the second prototype f-16 made and was used for flight and weapons testing for the f-16. It is now on display at the museum along with an exhibit on the YF-16 and the people who developed and flew it.
Come learn about the aviation history of the greater Fort Worth area and get up close to the most touchable warbirds in north Texas. Located at 3300 Ross Avenue Fort Worth, TX 760106.
