Letcher County Conservation District

Letcher County Conservation District The page outlines our services, projects and activities. We focus on helping landowners, farmers, ranchers & you.

Due to the poor management of soils in the 1930s that caused the Dust Bowl era, conservation districts were created to help preserve good soils, clean waters and improve air quality in all communities in the USA. With the technical assistance of the state and federal agencies, we have served Letcher county for over 60 years. Kentucky Conservation Districts are Special Purpose Government Entities,

organized under Kentucky Revised Statute 262. Conservation Districts are responsible for protecting our soil, water and other natural resources. We are a board of seven elected supervisors who receive no salary from the millage tax that funds our operations.

And now we begin our season of the caterpillars. Many may view them as munching monsters but remember you love them when you meet them again in the next stage of their lives. For most people we ask you just observe and protect their habitats. Promote flight, and pollination.

Include our farming families in your prayers as the agricultural economy is stressing everyone to unsettling levels. Fuel cost increases, lost exports, and now inflation on equipment parts and fertilizer is becoming unbearable.

As the Iran war drives fertilizer prices up 40%, the Trump administration is warning against price gouging. A new survey shows only 60% of corn farmers have secured their nitrogen needs for 2026.
