⚠️ DANGER HIGH WATER WARNING ⚠️

Torrential rainfall has caused hazardous road conditions throughout our response area. Please stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary!!!

TURN AROUND — DON’T DROWN!

Never attempt to drive through water covering a roadway. Even water that appears shallow can hide washed-out pavement, debris, or dangerous currents, and it only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep a vehicle off the road.

🚫 If you see water across the roadway, DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH IT.
🔄 Turn around and find a safe alternate route.

With more rain on the way this evening we urge the community to stay weather aware via local news stations.

⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE — WHITESVILLE, WV ⚠️

Whitesville Fire Department would like to make everyone aware of the potential for severe thunderstorms and flash flooding today and through the next several days.

⛈️ A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is currently in effect for Boone County until 5:00 PM today.

🌧️ A Flood Watch is also in effect through Friday morning.

Storms moving through our area may be capable of producing:

• 💨 Damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 MPH
• 🌪️ Isolated tornadoes
• ⚡ Frequent lightning
• 🌧️ Heavy rainfall
• 🌊 Flash flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas

Please take this weather threat seriously. Have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and be prepared to move to a safe location quickly if a warning is issued.

🚫 NEVER drive through flooded roadways. Water can be deeper and moving faster than it appears. Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

Secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, trampolines, and other loose objects before storms arrive.

Thank you to the Boone County Commission for assisting with this grant funded program. We were awarded a grant by West Virginia Emergency Management for this alarm system that will notify locals of incoming emergencies. When natural disasters occur, often times citizens find themselves without wifi or cellular services allowing proper notification of potential hazards. The Boone County Commission stepped up to assist with this project by allocating the funds of which will be 100% reimbursed once the project is completed. Stay tuned for updates!

At its Tuesday, July 21 meeting, the Boone County Commission agreed to contribute up to $46,873 in funds to the Whitesville Volunteer Fire Department to purchase and install an outdoor warning siren. ⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER ALERT – BE PREPARED ⚠️

The National Weather Service is monitoring the potential for a strong line of severe thunderstorms, possibly producing derecho-like conditions, to impact parts of our region tomorrow, Tuesday July 21st.

While the exact track and intensity can still change, damaging straight-line winds are the primary concern, along with heavy rain, frequent lightning, downed trees, and power outages.

Now is the time to prepare:
🌪️ Secure outdoor furniture, grills, trampolines, and other loose items.
🔋 Charge cell phones, flashlights, and backup batteries.
🌳 Avoid parking vehicles under large trees if possible.
📻 Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, especially overnight.
🚗 Never drive through flooded roadways.
⚡ Stay indoors and away from windows if severe storms approach.

If widespread damaging winds occur, please stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary so emergency crews can respond safely to calls for service.

The Whitesville Fire Department will be monitoring conditions closely and stands ready to respond if needed. We encourage everyone to stay weather aware, follow trusted weather sources, and have a plan in place before storms arrive.

🌊 Quarterly Training Complete! 🌊

Yesterday, the Boone County Swift Water Rescue Team spent the evening sharpening our skills during our quarterly training. From reviewing rescue techniques to practicing real-world scenarios, our team is committed to staying prepared for whatever comes our way.

Water rescues are some of the most dangerous emergencies first responders face, and regular training ensures we’re ready to respond safely and effectively when our community needs us.

A huge thank you to every team member who dedicated their time to train and continue building their knowledge and teamwork. Your commitment makes Boone County a safer place.

Remember, if you encounter flooded roadways, Turn Around, Don’t Drown. It only takes a small amount of moving water to sweep away a vehicle.
