This is a dinosaur, right? Think again!

As one of the first things visitors see, our Postosuchus gets well-deserved attention from folks of all ages, although many are shocked when they learn it’s NOT a dinosaur. It’s actually a rauisuchian, a group of prehistoric reptiles more closely related to modern-day crocodilians that lived during the late Triassic period. Regardless, it was an apex predator of its time that likely preyed upon the first dinosaurs!

Looking for a Friday night activity this week? Join us at the museum for our final Movies on Madison of the summer! 🎥

Since it’s the last one for a while, we’re going BIG with our feature film: “The Iron Giant”. The movie starts at 8 pm, but come out before the show for themed activities, like building your own robot, starting at 7 pm.

We had so much fun with our recent group programs and events that we had to share a few snapshots! From schools to summer camps and everything in between, we love providing these experiences for our community.

Looking to bring your group to the museum? Contact us to schedule a program or self-guided visit at least two weeks before your target visit date. We schedule as we receive requests, so contact us early to secure your spot.

With our new coastal Carolina i-Lab, we want to highlight some of the most misunderstood animals in our oceans: Sharks!🦈

Join us and the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher at the museum on Thursday, July 30 from 10am-12pm, as we take a deep dive into these toothy creatures with a special storytime, guided activities, and more. Put on your shark attire and we’ll see you then!

What can you do with a rock?🪨

We had so much fun answering that question with the Bladen County Public Library as part of their summer reading program, leading storytime programs at the Clarkton, Elizabethtown and Bladenboro branches. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

Looking for more? We have storytime programs at the museum on Thursday and Saturday at 10:30 am every week through August, as well as the first and third full week of every month during the school year. Visit our website for more program info.

Our team of museum researchers has returned from retracing the Lewis and Clark expedition, and their next stop is right here in Whiteville!

This Saturday, July 18, at noon, expedition leader Dr. Roland Kays will join us to share his stories, discoveries, and stunning nature photos from their journey. Get an up-close look at some of the wildlife he encountered on his cross-country trip. Before that, he’ll lead a storytime at 10:30 am for our youngest explorers.

We’ll see you and the entire family then!

The Museum at Whiteville will be closed for the holiday on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4. We will see you on Tuesday, July 7 when we resume our usual business hours!

After the holiday break, our i-Lab is getting a shakeup— new stations, updated layout, and of course, a fresh theme. We don’t want to reveal everything, but we’re so excited, we had to give you a sneak peek.

Nature Storytime was extra special this past Saturday, as we hosted Whiteville author Tonnye Fletcher to share her debut book at the museum!

Thanks to everyone who came out, including the Whiteville Garden Club for providing plants that transported the audience from our classroom into the book’s setting! We hope everyone enjoyed this event as much as we did.

Today, we were honored to host DNCR Secretary Pamela Cashwell on her visit to Whiteville. Our staff had a blast giving her and her team a tour of our Museum, having a little natural sciences fun along the way!
