This sweet cat was found in the area and appears to be missing its family. If you recognize this kitty please contact the UW-Whitewater Police Department 262-472-4660.

NHTSA's Click It or Ticket campaign returns next week, May 11th, and runs until May 31st.

On average, every 50 minutes, someone not wearing a seatbelt dies in a traffic crash. In 2023, 10,484 people lost their lives in crashes due to not wearing their seatbelt. Seatbelts are proven to significantly reduce the risk of death and serious injury by 45%.

UW-Whitewater Police Department is proud to have a select group of officers who specialize in instructing CPR. We host many CPR (to include AED and adult, child, and infant) and First Aid classes a year. Some of these classes are available to the public. CPR and First Aid are great skills to have and can help save a life.

The annual statewide tornado drills for Wisconsin scheduled for Thursday, April 16, 2026, are being canceled in light of recent severe weather events that have impacted communities across Wisconsin. There will not be an alternate date for these drills.

Today we will be discussing lightning. While lightning is interesting to watch, it is hazardous. If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you.

According to NOAA's National Centers For Environmental Information, since 2020, Wisconsin has had 2 lightning-related deaths, 5 lightning-related injuries, and lightning-related property damage totaling over $2,000,000.

Enjoy some interesting lightning facts:
⚡️Lightning can have 100 million to 1 billion volts, and contains billions of watts.
⚡️Energy from lightning heats the surrounding air anywhere from 18,000°F to up to 60,000°F. This sudden change in air temperature causes very high pressure, which results in thunder!
⚡️There is an average of 20 million cloud-to-ground flashes every year in the contiguous 48 states.
⚡️The odds of being struck by lightning during a given year are 1 in 1.2 million. The odds of being struck in your lifetime are 1 in 15,300.
