Dr. Richard James was a professor in the Marketing Department, but that didn't stop him from leading the effort to create our Nature Preserve's reconstructed prairie about 25 years ago by getting out there with student volunteers to remove woody invasive species and writing proposals to get funding for the first batches of prairie seed. Even after his regular involvement ended, we would find Dr. James walking the trails with his Brittany spaniels or digging out invasives like Canada thistle and keeping Grounds staff aware of any issues he saw on the property.

We are forever in debt to his work and proud to carry on his legacy through our seed collection and invasive species volunteer sessions so students and community members can enjoy the fruits of his labor while doing their part to improve this habitat further. The New England asters are blooming beautifully out in the nature preserve today. There can be two different color variations with this plant, ranging from a dark purple, to a hot pink color. New England aster is on the recommended list of plants for the rusty patch bumble bee, and is a beautiful add to all native plantings.

White clover blossoms spread carpetlike as Emily Peters and Ashley Roscoe walk one of the grassy trails through the prairie at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Nature Preserve. As student workers, they know the prairie well — they pause to pull the occasional w**d and to indulge their sense of wonder.
