Dr. Richard James was a professor in the Marketing Department, but that didn't stop him from leading the effort to create our Nature Preserve's reconstructed prairie about 25 years ago by getting out there with student volunteers to remove woody invasive species and writing proposals to get funding for the first batches of prairie seed. Even after his regular involvement ended, we would find Dr. James walking the trails with his Brittany spaniels or digging out invasives like Canada thistle and keeping Grounds staff aware of any issues he saw on the property.
We are forever in debt to his work and proud to carry on his legacy through our seed collection and invasive species volunteer sessions so students and community members can enjoy the fruits of his labor while doing their part to improve this habitat further. Rest in peace Dr. James, and thank you for your dedication to UW-Whitewater Nature Preserve.
