IMPORTANT PUBLIC NOTICE
WHITMAN WATER DEPT. WATER MAIN FLUSHING NOTICE

The Whitman Water Department will begin flushing its water mains (weather permitting) starting :
Monday May 18, 2026 to June 30, 2026
Flushing will take place between the hours of 8:00 P.M. and 1:00 A.M., Monday through Thursday. The water mains will be flushed by systematically opening fire hydrants for a brief period.
During the flushing operations, customers may notice a temporary discoloration of their water and fluctuations in the water pressure. We encourage customers to refrain from drawing water while flushing is being conducted in their neighborhoods to avoid potential staining of laundry, appliances and plumbing fixtures. The Department advises our customers to check the water clarity before any use after flushing in your area by running the cold water only until clear using an outside spigot or bath tub should clear the lines. If rust stains appear on washed clothing or fixtures, an iron removing detergent can be obtained free of charge from the DPW office on Essex St. Discolored water due to increased levels of dissolved iron may not be aesthetically pleasing, but according to the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.), it is not a public health threat.
The flushing program serves two important functions. First, it minimizes the build-up of mineral and other sediments, that over time can affect water quality and water flows through the pipe. Secondly, it allows the Whitman Water Department to verify the fire hydrants are working properly and available for fire protection.
The Department wishes to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
If you have any questions, please call our office at 781-447-7630.
