Program Overview
W.J. Maxey Boys Training School is a state operated residential treatment facility for delinquent male youths, 12 to
21 years of age. The 70 bed facility serves the needs of Michigan youth who require intensive or specialized rehabilitation treatment and a high level of program security and structure to provide personal and community safety. Treatment Highlights
Individualized planning is developed under the supervision of clinical professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, and certified social workers. The plan is implemented through a multi-disciplinary treatment team composed of direct care workers, teachers, clinical staff, social workers and specialized consultants under the direction of a master-level program manager. Individual, group and family approaches are used to stabilize behavior, build thinking and decision making skills, and develop pro-social and productive behavior patterns. Areas of specialized programming include:
S*x Offender Treatment
Substance Abuse Education and Treatment
Criminal Behavior Treatment
Behavioral Health Treatment (Mental Health)
Educational Services
The youth at Maxey provided a full-day, year round educational program through our NCA accredited academic program. All teachers are state certified educators and special education services are available. Youth are provided with an individualized education curriculum targeted toward high school or GED completion. Also, youth participate in life skills and vocation training classes - such as construction trades, cosmetology and graphic design. Ancillary Services
Mental Health Services
All youth are screened for mental health issues. Medication monitoring and therapy are used in addition to normal programming. Intensive treatment is available for a specialized unit with increased structure and clinical oversight. Community Reintegration
Community re-entry is viewed as the most critical component of successful rehabilitation. Treatment services build identity, develop skills and provide insight into re-entering the community. Ongoing family contact, problem-solving, and future planning are a large part of a youth's social support network for the re-entry phase. Medical Health Services
Maxey operates a state-of-the-art Health and Dental Services Clinic. Clinic staff includes a physician, nurses, a dentist, a dental hygienist, an optometrist and medical support personnel. Restorative Justice
Youth are required to participate in BARJ activities at Maxey. Volunteer projects include building houses for Habitat for Humanity, local soup kitchens, donating funds to domestic violence centers and supporting Michigan soldiers stationed overseas. Spiritual Development
Maxey provides a range of spiritual development activities and services. Special events and annual renewal celebration encourage youth to examine and develop their spiritual standing. Location
W.J. Maxey Boys Training School is located in southeast Michigan, placing it within an hours' drive of Detroit, Flint, Lansing, Pontiac and Jackson. Contact Information
