Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts The Sanitation Districts protect public health and the environment through innovative and cost-effec

The Sanitation Districts function on a regional scale and consist of 24 independent special districts severing about 5.5 million people in Los Angeles County. Our service area covers approximately 850 square miles and encompasses 78 cities and unincorporated county areas. Approximately 1,410 miles of sewers, 48 active pumping plants, and 11 wastewater treatment plants convey and treat about half t

he wastewater in Los Angeles County. Our solid waste facilities meet about one-fourth of the countywide solid waste management needs. We operate two active and four closed sanitary landfills, three landfill energy recovery facilities, three materials recovery/transfer facilities, one recycle center, and participate in the operation of two refuse-to-energy facilities. In 2014, the Sanitation Districts produced over 102,000 acre-feet of recycled water, which is reused at more than 750 sites. We now produce more recycled water that is beneficially reused than any other single recycled water producer in the United States. The Sanitation Districts also recycled over 43,000 tons of commodities. And our wastewater and solid waste operations generate approximateoly 120 megawatts of electricity - enough meet the power needs of about 160,000 Southern California homes.

We welcomed the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce to the Sanitation Districts for their Wake Up Whittier event.

Whittier City Council Member and Los Angeles County Sanitation District No. 2 Chairperson Catherine Warner and Sanitation Districts’ Assistant Chief Engineer & Assistant General Manager Martha Tremblay opened the meeting with welcoming remarks. As part of their visit, Chamber members had the opportunity to tour the San Jose Creek Water Reclamation Plant, where they got a firsthand look at the wastewater treatment process and how we convert waste into resources.

Thank you to the Whittier Area Chamber of Commerce for the opportunity to connect with local businesses, schools and community organizations.

August is National , highlighting the importance of clean water and protecting our natural water resources.

At the Sanitation Districts, our treatment plant laboratories analyze samples and provide critical data that support wastewater treatment, regulatory compliance and water quality monitoring, helping protect public health and the environment.

Take a behind-the-scenes look inside the San Jose Creek Laboratory, one of our 11 treatment plant laboratories, to see how science supports the essential services we provide every day.
