River Bend Nature Center (RBNC) in Wichita Falls, Texas is a twenty acre, private 501 c(3) non-profit environmental education facility that serves the communities of north Texas and southeastern Oklahoma. Uniquely placed in a conflux of geographical regions, River Bend connects people to their natural environment through educational activities, environmental awareness, and conservation examples. R

BNC recognizes that education is a fundamental tool for preserving the environmental and the personal health of a community. Priddy Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, Peyton’s Place, the Bryant Edwards Learning Center, the River Bottom Forest Trail, and the United Children’s Garden. We welcome you every day of the week to enjoy the sun, the clouds, the air, the plants, the birds, and the butterflies by touring the conservatory, walking the trails and gardens, or picnicking under the open air pavilion. There are many ways to explore the Rolling Plains at River Bend Nature Center.

Oh, hi there. 👋

I’m one of the prairie dogs at River Bend Nature Center, and I’d love for you to come see me!

Prairie dogs are incredibly social animals that live in family groups, dig elaborate underground burrows, and have a surprisingly complex way of communicating with one another. They use different chirps, barks, and calls to share information, interact with their neighbors, and warn the group when something unusual is nearby.

You might even catch one doing a “jump-yip”—popping up on its back legs, throwing its front paws in the air, and calling out! Other prairie dogs will sometimes join in, too.
