There was a lot to celebrate at today's City Council meeting. ๐ŸŽ‰

โ—พ๏ธ This Friday, June 19, 2026, was proclaimed Juneteenth Celebration Day in Wichita Falls. On June 19, 1865, months after the Civil War ended and more than 2 years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing enslaved people, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to free 250,000 people still held in bo***ge. This Juneteenth, we commemorate and honor the tireless work of abolitionists who made it their mission to free enslaved people.

Events to Celebrate Juneteenth will begin on Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Jalonick Park, located at 405 Walnut Street. A second Juneteenth Celebration will be held on Saturday, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Spudder Park, located at the corner of Tulsa and Farris streets. Both events will have activities for the entire family.

โ—พ๏ธ The month of June 2026 was recognized as National Homeownership Month in Wichita Falls. Our Neighborhood Resources Division's First-Time Homebuyer (FTHB) Program helps eligible families and individuals achieve the dream of homeownership by reducing barriers to home purchase and creating pathways to long-term financial stability and community investment.

โ—พ๏ธ Wednesday, June 17, 2026, has been proclaimed as Housing Choice Voucher Program Day in Wichita Falls. The Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8), administered locally by the Cityโ€™s Housing Department with support from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), provides critical housing assistance to low-income families, seniors, veterans, and persons with disabilities, helping reduce housing insecurity and improve quality of life.

A scary situation ended with some good news yesterday.

Thanks to the quick response of the City of Wichita Falls Fire Department, all residents safely escaped a house fire on Avenue E after being alerted by a working smoke detector. Firefighters also rescued and successfully resuscitated a dog found inside the home.

Thank you to our firefighters for their swift actions and dedication to protecting lives, both human and furry. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿš’
