Thank you to the wonderful volunteers from Downtown Lions Club, Wichita Area Sister Cities, and Save Century II who planted flowers, picked up trash, and donated their time to beautify downtown. The Parks Department graciously supplied some daisies, dianthus, and purple salvia.

Any homeowner living in this area bounded by the Arkansas River to Washington, and Kellogg to Central, is paying an extra tax called a SSMID - Self Supported Municipal Improvement District. This is a second tax, a surcharge if you will, that you pay in addition to your property tax. How many of you know that? There will be a hearing by Wichita City Council to approve the SSMID budget for 2027, and this tax has increased by 57%.

Isn’t this double taxation? Our property tax mill levy goes to pay for downtown clean up. But the SSMID ALSO taxes for the $400,000 downtown clean up, given to Wichita Downtown Development Corporation. Is there overlap?

SSMID Mill levy has hit the maximum 10 mils allowed by state law. Fueling this increase is $400,000 for ‘Downtown Cleanup’ - staff, street sweeper, ATV, snow & trash removal equipment. This used to be the City’s job.
